Den jegfortaellende narrativt diffuse og neurotisk uklare Philippe er klart i familie med Frankrigs og modernismens indolente antihelt. Det meningsforladte, ladt omstrejfende ogløsagtige menneske, som Albert Camus med inspiration fra landstrygeren Frank i James M. Cains 'Postbuddet ringer altid to gange' gjorde til verdenslitteratur med sin Meursault i klassikeren 'Den fremmede'.
