About this listen

A CHILDREN’S TOP 10 BESTSELLER (TCM)

The debut novel from Alice Oseman, author of the 2021 YA Book Prize winning Loveless. Solitaire features the characters that inspired the beloved series Heartstopper – now a major Netflix series. Heartstopper Season 2, coming soon

The Catcher in the Rye for the digital age” The Times

My name is Tori Spring. I like to sleep and I like to blog. Last year – before all that stuff with Charlie and before I had to face the harsh realities of A-Levels and university applications and the fact that one day I really will have to start talking to people – I had friends. Things were very different, I guess, but that’s all over now.

Now there’s Solitaire. And Michael Holden.

I don’t know what Solitaire are trying to do, and I don’t care about Michael Holden.
I really don’t.

This incredible debut novel by outstanding young author Alice Oseman is perfect for fans of John Green, Rainbow Rowell and all unflinchingly honest writers.

Really quite nice

Really good narrator and story is sweet whilst quite cliche. I think it was predictable and straightforward but the characters were so loveable and surprisingly complex.

Conflicted

firstly I feel it's important to clarify that I am an Alice Oseman fan, the book is amazing and I'm a total heartstopper comic fan, it's what drue me to the author in the first place, I suppose the reason for my confliction on this book is that... gosh it's hard to explain, this is a re write as originally I went on a long rant about the grandfather, but I feel whilst this caused me to rage like a loon it's also a show of the amazing writing that went in to the book to provoke such a strong response and that's just what this book feels like to me a contradiction of feelings and views. I'll stop there as I sun the risk of going on yet another rant, but I will say the voiceover actress was great, she fit my image of Tori perfectly.

Solitaire !!!

this is actually like the best thing i’ve ever read, definitely a new comfort book. Alice Oseman’s writing style is amazing and i don’t think i’ve ever understood a character as well as i understand Victoria Spring

It was great!

I really enjoyed the book and the person reading it fitted Tory perfectly! However I didn’t like how the words she was saying sometimes didn’t match the words in the book:(

Excellent voice acting; payoff wasn't amazing unfortunately.

The characters were super likable and they actually felt like teenagers: overdramatic, extremely self centered and stuck up their own asses. Amazing writing in that regard.

The story itself was alright, very predictable in some parts and the payoff as to who's behind solitaire was kind of an "oh okay" moment as opposed to the big reveal I was hoping/expecting.

Definitely worth a listen if you liked heartstopper since Tori's the absolute star of the show. Hell even if you haven't read/seen Heartstopper it's a decent listen since it doesn't necessarily rely on the show apart from one character.

Worth a listen

I did really enjoy it, i thought it was a really accurate portrayal of teenagers and was very relateable. The characters felt real and the dialogue was believable. Really enjoyed the wit, sarcasm and humor undermining the novel.
