Summary

Slough House is Jackson Lamb’s kingdom; a dumping ground for members of the intelligence service who’ve screwed up: left a secret file on a train, blown surveillance, or become drunkenly unreliable. They’re the service’s poor relations – the slow horses – and bitterest among them is River Cartwright, whose days are spent transcribing mobile phone conversations. But when a young man is abducted, and it’s threatened that he’ll be beheaded live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem him.

Is the victim who he first appears to be? And what’s the kidnappers’ connection with a disgraced journalist? As the clock ticks on the execution, River finds that everyone involved has their own agenda….

Slow start but worth sticking with

I nearly gave up due to the very slow exposition after the initial opening. The repetitive style of the writing is irritating but this is worth staying with; a good listen and well performed.

Riveting

Brilliant storytelling that is both gripping and prescient. Highly recommended, whether you are a spy thriller lover or not.

A new op for me...

Not the type of story I would normally choose to read, but trying to expand my genre horizons. Overall the story was good, and engaging. I found the performance little confusing as there were quite a few characters involved at points, but that is a personal experience and may not be the same for everyone.
I think I may have enjoyed or appreciated the story more, had I read it myself as opposed to listening to it, nonetheless I liked it and will endeavour to read more of this genre and author.

How believable was that

Really enjoyed this book. Such a beautiful narration. The story line was so believable and ghastly a reflection of our times almost. A recommended listen

Really enjoyable espionage-set modern thriller

Style put me off at first but grew on me until I couldn't turn it off. Excellent characterisation and several very enjoyable characters. Reader nailed the tone throughout. Entertainment rather than enlightenment, but absorbing entertainment.

Not for the politically correct

Slow Horses was a find from another reviewer and I decided to give it a go. Something a little different from my usual choice of audio. All I can say is that I have now finished the latest book in this series, London Rules, book 5, and each instalment just gets better, funnier, and thoroughly entertaining. Sean Barrett narrates absolutely perfectly, his Jackson Lamb is spot on and brings to life this revolting character in full brilliant colour. With a wonderful twist of spook, espionage political intrigue and a touch of reality, this series lends to an excellent listen with many funny one liners to keep you on your toes. And of course there is a touch of Russian thrown in to one of the instalments to ensure the spy theme is kept alive.

Refreshing espionage book

Not your flashy Bond type full of exotic locations, beautiful people and far fetched villains and all the better for it. Some good dry humour interspersed along the way.
