Summary
“We'll protect him.”
“I don’t want to be the poster boy.”
Hockey player Kevin Shaw, fresh out of university, just signed onto a Toronto team for a year. He knows he isn't innately gifted, but he works damn hard to make up for it. The last thing he needs during his first season of pro hockey is a distraction...but he can't say no when he's asked to train with a sexy friend of a friend. He wants to get better, grab a spot on the third or fourth line, and not let slip any hint of attraction to his new buddy.
“If they see, they see.”
Called up from the minor league to the major league at the end of last season, hockey player Matty O'Brien is secretly terrified he won't hack it. He's quick on his feet on the ice, and he loves living with his buddies and his dog after practice ends. One thing's missing: a relationship. He plays center forward, but he's always the wingman and never the center of attention. The way Kevin watches him makes him feel like the star player.
“He's just jealous of what you and I have.”
A spontaneous kiss sends them both scurrying for shelter, deciding whether they have room in their life for more than friendship. Just as they start to get comfortable, before they can decide what they are, someone finds out their secret. Locker room gossip is annoying for Matty but fatal for Kevin's career if the guys on the team don't shut it down.
Will Kevin gain the maturity and strength to stand up for himself without plunging deep into the closet or risking his career all over again? And can they trust their friends to hold their secrets close?

Kevin and Matty
Kevin has just been signed to the Toronto team, he is asked to team up with Matty to train pre season. Sparks fly and it looks like Kevin's roommate is going to put them in the spotlight. Loved it

My favorite couple!
I loved Kevin and Matty and was sure this would be my favorite book yet, but then it ended with nothing resolved and I wanted to cry. The only decision to come out of the entire story was to try for a relationship. With all of the build up towards friends supporting them, having their backs, etc, I thought there would be a resolution. No matter what, this was my favorite, most fun couple!

Redoing this series on Audible
Redoing this series on Audible
This is a story of Kevin and Matty. Both hockey players in a league where no one's out yet. Kevin doesn't want to be the gay poster boys. But then Matty joins the team.
There's a lot of hidden glances, is he or isn't he. Oh and some sex. What more do we need in a book, yes a HEA.
The whole Riley brothers series are hot. Great narration from Michael Dean, love that these books are written as points of view.

Loved this sporty addition to the series
I've been loving the Riley Brothers series, and this sports-themed romance was another hit! Despite how heavily dominated this story was by practices, training, and all things athletic, Kevin and Matty's growing relationship was undoubtedly in the spotlight from start to finish. I loved the concept of a rookie/veteran player romance and thought it was nicely executed in this story. I'll admit that I was a bit baffled about the way these guys casually kept kissing in public but claiming they wanted to stay closeted, but it was pretty cute to think that they just couldn't resist each other. While the romance in this story had a fully fleshed out and satisfying plotline, I do wish there had been a little more closure on the hockey side of things. This story leaves off before either of their seasons has started, and I was disappointed that I didn't get the chance to see how Kevin and Matty made their relationship work while balancing a full atheletic play schedule. Even without getting those answers, this was still a great story with two really awesome main characters. Michael Dean has been an excellent narrator for this entire series, and this book was no exception!

great book!
I think this is my favorite book in the series. I love sports romance books and this was just wonderful. I also loved catching up with the rest of the guys and I'm looking forward to next book. And I really love the narrator, he's bringing those characters to life, he's amazing!

My first E. Davies sports romance
I am not a huge fan of sports and sports romances, but I really enjoyed this one by E. Davies. The hockey was not overpowering but there was enough to give the listener the feel of the team and locker room spirit and why these guys might not feel comfortable being completely out and open about their relationship. They make and incredibly sweet and hot couple and Michael Dean brings all those emotions to life perfectly.

Need more
H I need so much more of these two, I loved their characters and really felt for them with their issues and resolutions. The story didn’t seem to resolve completely and I wonder if they will revisit this in the next book. Can’t wait for more. I must admit that I do love the narrator he’s given them so much extra personality.

Slow burn without a resolution
This is the 5th book in the Riley Brothers series which originally centered on brothers Cameron, Jackson and Thomas Riley. Starting with Book 4, the series branched off into friends of the Riley Brothers, so the connection to the core family diminishes with each book. This book almost felt like a standalone to me, so if you are reading for the Riley Brothers, don’t expect too much tie in. This book focuses on Kevin, Cam’s former hockey teammate, and hockey player Matty O’Brien. I love sports romances so this story definitely checked that box, and I really liked both Kevin and Matty; they had a lot of potential as a couple. I say “potential” because this is a definite slow-burn that never really materializes into anything in a satisfying way. The slow burn takes almost the entire book and when they finally get together, the book ends. I sincerely hope that this story is continued into the next book in the series because the structure of this one, frankly, annoyed me.
Michael Dean does a great job of narration - he always does - but even his skill can’t make up for the underlying story itself. To his credit, he creates distinct voices for the characters and delivers the emotion behind the words. For me, he was the best part of this book, so if you are going to partake in this story, definitely do it with the audiobook.
