About this listen

Winner, 2017 APA Audie Awards - Fiction

When two Union soldiers stumble onto a plantation in northern Georgia on a warm May day in 1864, the last thing they expect is to see the Union flag flying high - or to be greeted by a group of freed slaves and their Jewish mistress. Little do they know that this place has an unusual history.

Twelve years prior, Adelaide Mannheim - daughter of Mordecai, the only Jewish planter in the county - was given her own maid, a young slave named Rachel. The two became friends, and soon they discovered a secret: Mordecai was Rachel's father, too.

As the country moved toward war, Adelaide and Rachel struggled to navigate their newfound sisterhood - from love and resentment to betrayal and, ultimately, forgiveness.

Now, facing these Union soldiers as General Sherman advances nearer, their bond is put to the ultimate test. Will the plantation be spared? Or will everything they've lived for be lost?

I loved this book. I didn't know much about the abolition of slavery and the American war.

Magnificent

What a ‘read’...
Yes, 5 stars for each category well-deserved.
Bahni Turpin the icing on the cake. Her telling/acting of such humanity and horrific inhumanity is magnificent, sheer brilliance.
I recommend it 110%

Sister of mine

I throughly enjoyed this story, the story telling and narration was beautifully presented. All my life I’ve been drawn to the history of the slave trade especially the transatlantic/Caribbean slavery. I am British of black Caribbean and Jewish heritage, Eastern European and Portuguese Jew, born in London the early 1960’s. An unusual mix at anytime now and in history. I grew up with my white Jewish family. Attending synagogue and learning Hebrew. I’ve travelled extensively to many African countries and all over the Caribbean and America researching chattel slavery.
It was with amazement that I read this beautiful novel, and for the first time read about both my heritages brought together in a novel rather than a factual book. My grandfathers family left Germany in 1848 to come to England, and my grandmothers family left Portugal during the Spanish Inquisition (1769) to flew to Holland.
I fell in love with the characters in this book, their journey of sisterhood, slavery and love. The characters had depth and the book was so well researched and written. I could picture myself there, which is a first for me with a novel.
I wanted to thank the author for this beautiful story of both my cultures during a period of time that is rarely thought of with love and positivity.
Thank you and I’m looking forward to reading more of your books.

Beautifully explored intersections

This book explores and beautifully resolves the complex intersections of wealth, war and culture in North Georgia and the southern US states in the mid 1800s. The story is well woven around two sisters. Their father, a shrewd wealthy Jewish landowner, their mothers, the mistress and the slave girl. The story explores all the complex themes of entitlement and servitude and deeply entrenched beliefs about women and land.
Exceptionally performance with engaging and consistent voices of characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent in their company.
