About this listen

Even the darkest secrets can't stay buried forever.

Five figures gather 'round a shallow grave. They had all taken turns to dig. An adult-sized hole would have taken longer. An innocent life had been taken, but the pact had been made. Their secrets would be buried, bound in blood.

Years later a headmistress is found brutally strangled, the first in a spate of gruesome murders that shock the Black Country.

But when human remains are discovered at a former children's home, disturbing secrets are also unearthed. DI Kim Stone fast realizes she's on the hunt for a twisted individual whose killing spree spans decades.

As the body count rises, Kim needs to stop the murderer before they strike again. But to catch the killer, can Kim confront the demons of her own past before it's too late?

Fans of Rachel Abbott, Val McDermid ,and Mark Billingham will be gripped by this exceptional new voice in British crime fiction.

A detective hiding dark secrets, Kim Stone will stop at nothing to protect the innocent. Silent Scream is the first book in the series. Watch out for Evil Games, coming soon.

Critic reviews

"A superb debut by an assured new writer. Blending sharp wit with emotion, I thoroughly enjoyed the ride alongside DI Kim Stone and look forward to the next outing." (Mel Sherratt)
"I absolutely loved it!.... This one is one of the best crime thrillers I've read in a long time, and that includes mainstream authors such as James Patterson! I would seriously put this book in the same league." ( Fiona's Book Reviews)

Great story, shame about the narration

This was an absorbing storyline. However, the narration left a lot to be desired. Apart from seeming to be on a non-stop express train, there seemed to be no feeling for the individual characters with the narrator almost singing her way through the book.

I will get the next book in the hope that there is an improvement as the narration does not do justice to an otherwise superb book.

Disappointing

Believed the hype and felt let down. Tedious story, bad delivery. The narrator hardly drew breath and not much character differentiation.

Disappointing narration

Decent story, but unfortunately overall score drops because of poor narration which really affected my enjoyment. Narrator needs to do homework on regional accents ('Black Country' accent especially inconsistent, bordering on Scouse at times!) plus unforgivable pronunciation of local places names (Cradley Heath, Rowley Regis, and even Bredon Hill all wrong). At times it was difficult to work out which character was speaking. I even had to resort to rewinding, something I've never had to do before. I notice the same narrator has done the next book in the series, so I probably won't bother.

shame about the performer

the storyline was good and the characters well rounded but the narrator spoilt my enjoyment as she seemed to be oblivious to the punctuation. Pauses at full stops are so important!

Absolutely loved it

I have now read the first three books and absolutely loved them all. They are fast-paced but remain in the realm of believable. The characters portrayed are all very 'human' and well studied. The main character is just that, a character! I love her bluntness, tinged with surprising humanity. The author could have become hung up in the main character's back story but didn't and the books are all the stronger for it.

Silent Scream

Excellent book, again twists and turns prevail. An expert insight into psychology makes characters believable.
