Summary
From Nora Roberts comes the #1 New York Times bestseller Shelter in Place (June 2018) - a powerful tale of heart, heroism...and propulsive suspense.
It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped together, and the manager at the video game store tended to customers. Then the shooters arrived.
The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever. In the years that followed, one would dedicate himself to a law enforcement career. Another would close herself off, trying to bury the memory of huddling in a ladies' room, helplessly clutching her cell phone - until she finally found a way to pour her emotions into her art.
But one person wasn't satisfied with the shockingly high death toll at the DownEast Mall. And as the survivors slowly heal, find shelter, and rebuild, they will discover that another conspirator is lying in wait - and this time, there might be nowhere safe to hide.

If you liked “The Search” you'll enjoy this too...
...after all, they're pretty much identical in terms of plot, main characters, etc. Different characters' names & occupations (artist in the this, dog trainer in the latter), but both set on an island, with a protagonist who's survived a violent crime earlier in life, only for it to come back and threaten to destroy her life years later.
Now, maybe I’m missing something, and this similarity is something that is widely known and publicised and was done for a reason. I must admit, once I’d noticed the similarity (it didn’t take long!) I kind of enjoyed spotting the parallels as I listened on. Of the two, “Shelter in Place” is better, especially the Mrs Madrigal-like Ci Ci, in my opinion.

Great story and descriptions…..I could imagine the places very well
The characters were interesting, entertaining and believable. A bit of an anticlimax at the end, but it didn’t ruin it.

One of the best!
This is one of the best audiobooks I have listened to. Great story by Nora Roberts, really kept me on tenterhooks at times and what a fabulous narrator in January LaVoy. It says something when I get up to go to the bathroom at three in the morning, then start listening again! Look forward to hearing more by both author and narrator.

Exceptional
brilliant story line, fantastically performed by the narrator January LaVoy. I do not often pass comment on audio books only to indicate my overall feeling, but in this instance I found this story compelling and felt I had to let others know how good this audio book is. One of the best I have ever listened to. I'm not easily moved by a crime story, they are mostly run of the mill, but this was different which made it as the headline says EXCEPTIONAL

Loved it
I really enjoyed listening to this book.
I loved how the characters developed over time and how their stories wove together after that first shocking event!
I decided to give this one a try after LOVING The Chronicles of The One Trilogy. I was worried that the book wouldn’t be as good as the trilogy but it really was!
Another firm favourite author now

Well researched story
I did not expect to enjoy this book.I tried to get into it twice but got put off by the violence of the opening chapter. However I persevered on the third try and then it was full on , could’nt stop listening until it was over . It completely gripped me, I felt the reality of how victims must feel after such an event,Nora must have worked hard to understand the aftermath.
Loved the narrators empathy, she got the whole atmosphere and tension so well.
Truly amazing book.
