About this listen
A gripping tale of war, adventure, horror, and romance, Shardik is a remarkable exploration of mankind's universal desire for divine incarnation.
Richard Adams' Watership Down was a number-one New York Times best seller, a stunning work of the imagination, and an acknowledged modern classic. In Shardik, Adams sets a different yet equally compelling tale in a far-off fantasy world. Shardik is a fantasy of tragic character, centered on the long-awaited reincarnation of the gigantic bear Shardik and his appearance among the half-barbaric Ortelgan people. Mighty, ferocious, and unpredictable, Shardik changes the life of every person in the story. His advent commences a momentous chain of events.
Kelderek the hunter, who loves and trusts the great bear, is swept up by destiny to become first devotee and then prophet, then victorious soldier, then ruler of an empire and priest-king of Lord Shardik - Messenger of God - only to discover ever-deeper layers of meaning implicit in his passionate belief in the bear's divinity.

Hoped to follow WD with something equally interesting and emotive but this goes on and on and on and just isn’t for me.

The Bear doesn’t talk !
I’ve owned this book for many years now and as with most of my books I hadn’t read it . I have now and am sad to say there are more enjoyable ways to spend 17 hours . It’s ok but if you were expecting Watership Down but with Bears then you’ll be sorely disappointed. It probably doesn’t help that I’ve listened to the entire GOT recently and The Silmarilion . This version of fantasy wasn’t fantastic enough for me .

watership down for grown ups
I loved how Richard adams made this book in a greecian mythic style with all the wandering and gore he wrote watership down with. the story was amazing if a little colonial at times, it's messages of faith stand the test of time. I would say the book is a long listen for a time when you can listen in large chunks as each book.is quite lo g with a complex story, lots of characters who are constantly referred to I found myself skipping back a chapter to catch up
truly though a great read that had me feeling for shardik and the tucimda over the oppressive keldarek. the journey of the bear and all the references back to different parts of Christian faith were interesting to guess at and twisted the story very well with no clear truth to come out of the book it doesn't feel preachy while also being a great narrative piece that gives the story direction.
