About this listen
Sixteen-year-old Neryn is alone in the land of Alban, where the oppressive king has ordered anyone with magical strengths captured and brought before him. Eager to hide her own canny skill - a uniquely powerful ability to communicate with the fairy-like Good Folk - Neryn sets out for the legendary Shadowfell, a home and training ground for a secret rebel group determined to overthrow the evil King Keldec.
During her dangerous journey, she receives aid from the Good Folk, who tell her she must pass a series of tests in order to recognize her full potential. She also finds help from a handsome young man, Flint, who rescues her from certain death - but whose motives in doing so remain unclear.
Neryn struggles to trust her only allies. They both hint that she alone may be the key to Alban's release from Keldec's rule. Homeless, unsure of who to trust, and trapped in an empire determined to crush her, Neryn must make it to Shadowfell not only to save herself, but to save Alban.

The narration might not be everyone's cup of tea
A good rip-roaring adventure spoilt by a strange narration that unfortunately makes the lead character sound weak and wheedling.

Good story, mournful narration
Juliet Marillier can certainly write a great story. However this narrator has a tragic tone which is at odds with the feisty heroine whose tale it is.

Great story shame about narrator
IF you can get past Henrietta Mere’s OTT narration it’s a great story if you enjoy fantasy fiction. I loved the ‘little folk’ but read others reviews & listen to the sample as the over dramatisation gets on your nerves sadly!!

Hear the sample before purchasing
I love Juliet Marillier's books and Shadowfell is no exception. However, the performance is intense and hard to listen to. There is a lot of shouting, drama and abrupt changes in volume. I recommend people check out the sample to see if they like the narrator.

Not that bad.
The narration is not as bad as other reviewers are making it seem. In this first book, the character is timid, and it is narrated this way. I found it slightly irriating to begin with, but once I understood the characterisation, it made sense. The girl herself is weak and timid. Push through this tone, etc, and listen to the narration of the other characters, and you will understand. Also, listen too the narration on book 2 and book 3, and you'll find Neryn's tone much improved.
I did not know about this author, or anything else she has written. I am glad I came to it. The story is compelling and well written. the world is easily brought to life and reading or listening all the way through will explain a lot of the world that Neryn lives in.

Myth and fairy folk
At first I thought I would struggle with this one because the narrator has that “Tess of the d’Urbervilles” quality to it but I think the story manages to make sense of it and it seems to work. It is very much a story about us and them which did seem to start to resolve its self a bit towards the end but unless I missed something it was unclear how. Maybe it will be explained in the next book which I am tempted to read

Not Everything is a Drama
Luckily I have the printed books of this series. I just couldn't listen to this narrator gasp and panic her way through this book, never mind a whole trilogy. Ms Meire sounds as though she's in a permanent state of frantic, gasping stress. Juliet Marillier's books have drama enough without a frantic reader. I'll be returning these audio books, and I'll read the printed copies myself.
