Summary
Hadley Whitaker is a liar, a killer, and a chocoholic, but she's getting better about the first two. Or maybe she's just getting better at them.
Some days it's hard for her to tell fact from fiction, but only one truth matters. Goddess willing, she's going to be the next Potentate of Atlanta. Even if it means playing nice with Midas Kinase, a shifter whose mysterious past might just be grimmer than her own.
When a bloodthirsty rogue begins hunting the city's paranormals, Hadley ropes Midas into letting her work the case. But that rope starts to feel more like a noose as they come closer to discovering not only the rogue's identity, but each other's darkest secrets.
Contains mature themes.

Ok, but underwhelming
This book was ok, and I’m vaguely interested in what happens next, but not enough to get the next book. It seemed like I was missing some back story at some points which made sense when I found out there’s another series that precedes this one with another character as the main part.

Fabulous story
This is a follow on from another series which I haven't listened to yet. Initially it feels like you are not starting from the beginning and while it took me some time to understand the world the story is set in, it didn't take away from the enjoyment of the story and the mystery. There was enough information about the characters to make them seem interesting and still leave the listener with the feeling that there is a lot more to know and enjoy.
I loved Hadley's quick wit and geekiness and laughed aloud several times while listening. There was only one minor thing that left me a little confused; several times I didn't know if Hadley was thinking or speaking aloud. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

Decent spin-off
Better if you read a few of ‘The beginners guide to necromancy’ series first, as this spin-off about Hadley and Midas will make more sense / some parts will have helpful context. I liked it and found the characters relatable and the narration easy on the ear. Will happily listen to next in series.

Hadn’t listened to The previous
Books but enjoyed this one. Am going to move on to book 2, & may well go for the previous series if this one doesn’t explain the back story as I move through the series
