About this listen
After an accident left her near death, Sera Littlejohn is struggling to piece together her life. But when a violet-eyed stranger reveals a supernatural battle veiled in the shadows, Sera is tempted to the edge of madness by a dangerous desire.
Ferris Archer takes Sera Littlejohn under his wing now that she is talyan, possessed by a repentant demon with hellish powers. Archer and his league of warriors have long risked their demon-shattered souls to stop darker spirits from wreaking havoc, but they’ve never fought beside a female talya before. And never in all his centuries has Archer found a woman who captivates him like Sera.
,p>With the balance shifting between good and evil, passion and possession, Sera and Archer must defy the darkness and dare to embrace a love that will mark them forever. ©2009 2009 by Jessa Slade (P)2010 Blackstone Audio, Inc.Critic reviews

A bit of a lackluster start to the series
I picked this up purely as I love Renee Raudman's narration: which was, again, excellent. The book; less so.
Yes, as a new series I expect a slow build up as the infodump of the word and its rules are introduced. But it took so long to get up and go that I nearly got up to do something else! Saying that, I quite enjoyed the second half and had a big listening binge at the end to find out what happened next :)
There was plently of good and bad. I liked the premise, the romance between the leads and the secondary characters were fun, if only loosely drawn. I hated Sera's incessant barage of meta-physical questions - it got old quickly. Nor did I like the random bits from the baddies point of view. I also felt really confused about the classes, powers and the hierachy of the demons (all of them: "good", bad and redemption-seeking). However, I really liked the fact that there were these three factions and subtlties and would've liked to find out more.
This hasn't inspired me to pick up another in this series; but I still enjoyed it. Recomended for those who like their paranormal-romance to be more romance than fantasy or action.

Author swallowed a thesaurus!
Could have been better, the story was there (although a bit slow) but the author was so long-winded in their word choices which made it hard to follow in some places. Sometimes it felt like reading from a textbook, I nearly gave up halfway through as I felt like I lost what was actually happening. Shame.
