one of the finest romances

Have listened to around 20 romances in the past 6 months, Sea Glass has to be one of my favorites. To the point that during a resent visit to the sea side I was busied myself for hours collecting different sand smoothed coloured glass from the beach hoping to use it in a craft. However after hours I only came up with five pieces. Enough rambling from me. story is very much a traditional with many elements of traditional romantic notations weaved into the characters and circumstances. Pam is an introverted artist who has lost her nerve to create while Mel has taken on a new life to repair and open for business and old sea side inn. The strength of this novel comes from the quality of the traditional romantic tale, as well as the detail in which the characters are developed, their fears, and conflicts. A lot of insight is provided into the creative struggle of the artist, which I can relate as well as the the drive to be successful in a new life. A very enjoyable novel and one of the few I plan to listen to again.

Pretty bog standard

This story turned out to be pretty much like a lot of lesbian novels out there. Basic idea being that one person is portrayed as straight, but then finds themselves attracted to another woman. This however was not the sum total of the story, because at least the 'straight' woman had known for some time that she was gay, and was only in the marriage for the sake of a son.

And with that you do get something that is a bit different to the other stories of a similar ilk.

The performance by the narrator wasn't too bad, but could have been slightly better at times when distinguishing between characters.

Am I happy to keep this in my audible collection? Yes, because although it doesn't stretch you story wise, it is alright to use on a day when you don't want to think about anything too hard.

Unambitious and distinctly average

Look, as I reader, I know what to expect from books of this genre. They are often pulpy and hysterical and very much predicable. So this was more of the same... granted, not so hysterical and the tone was calm and measured, but still... There is a certain formula that lesbian romance novels follow..1, the characters meet, are attracted, but clash. 2. Take ages to get together... largely as each assumes that the other is not interested. I can't think why, what with the preponderance of shallow gasps and dilated pupils, but anyway...3. Two major obstacles appear...the first one based on the stubbornness of one of the main characters, the second due to car accident/shooting/job offer elsewhere/children etc 4. They reconcile both times and by the time they do, the reader is practically in a coma and has long ceased to care.

So this book is kinda like that. It wasn't horrendously written or anything. Granted, the two main characters were very similar, like the author was writing aspects of herself for both rather than imagining two very different characters. I would guess that this is the authors first novel, and for that it is OK, but really she has a way to go in terms of surprising her audience. It was very, very predictable, and badly needs a dose of tension or intrigue.

It's a matter of preference really...

If you're preference is cheesy overlong soppy predictable romantic fiction then this has all the ingredients by the bucket load.
If you like sharp narrative, well defined characters that pull you into a romance within an actual story, this will bore you.
I kept listening in hope that at some point a story would evolve, as each chapter went by I lost hope, disappointed that it was never to be. It ended as predictably as it set the pace to be.
I usually reach the end of the end of a book desperately wanting another chapter or even a sequel. Not this book.
I don't know how I made it to the end, curiosity I suppose, with just disappointment at the end. It had potential.
But that's just my opinion, it might be perfect for those that likes this type of book. Just not me
