About this listen

A bone-chilling anthology from legendary horror editor Ellen Datlow, Screams from the Dark contains twenty-nine all-original tales about monsters.

From werewolves and vampires, to demons and aliens, the monster is one of the most recognizable figures in horror. But what makes something, or someone, monstrous?

Award-winning and up-and-coming authors like Richard Kadrey, Cassandra Khaw, Indrapramit Das, Priya Sharma, and more attempt to answer this question. These all-new stories range from traditional to modern, from mainstream to literary, from familiar monsters to the unknown . . . and unimaginable.

This chilling collection has something to please—and terrify—everyone, so lock your doors, hide under your covers, and try not to scream.

An exceptional collection of a certain type

I was initially put off by a review. I gave it a go and unusual for me, I listened to the editors introduction. Ms Datlow outlined the theme of these "monster stories" or more accurately "monsterous stories". The selected stories are a mixed lot as expected, and while there are the usual mix of monsters and ghoulies, it is really tales that exemplify just what makes a person or a thing monsterous. The notorious Dr. Mengele of Auschwitz was a monster as his mind and viciousness were monsterous. So why some of these tales include supernatural beings, others, and I would contend the finest, are not only about human beings, but have historical roots. I enjoyed this collection a great deal.

Goddamit Ellen!!!

Don't bother buying this anthology, each story is the copy of the one before and they are all between mediocre and bad.
This is the last time I will buy something published by Ellen Datlow (sure the surname is evocative of the quality of her work).
