About this listen

Many tales are told of the Syldoon Empire and its fearsome soldiers, who are known throughout the world for their treachery and atrocities. Some say that the Syldoon eat virgins and babies-or perhaps their own mothers. Arkamondos, a bookish young scribe, suspects that the Syldoon's dire reputation may have grown in the retelling, but he's about to find out for himself. Hired to chronicle the exploits of a band of rugged Syldoon warriors, Arki finds himself both frightened and fascinated by the men's enigmatic leader, Captain Braylar Killcoin. A secretive, mercurial figure haunted by the memories of those he's killed with his deadly flail, Braylar has already disposed of at least one impertinent scribe...and Arki might be next. Archiving the mundane doings of millers and merchants was tedious, but at least it was safe. As Arki heads off on a mysterious mission into parts unknown, in the company of the coarse, bloody-minded Syldoon, he is promised a chance to finally record an historic adventure well worth the telling, but first he must survive the experience! A gripping military fantasy in the tradition of Glen Cook, Scourge of the Betrayer explores the brutal politics of Empire-and the searing impact of violence and dark magic on a man's soul.

Editor reviews

Narrator Chris Chung's youthful, likeable voice quickly makes naive young scribe Arkamondos familiar and sympathetic as he leaves his dull life to chronicle the exploits of a band of rugged Syldoon warriors. In contrast to Arki's thoughtful nature, Chung adds texture and roughness to the voices of the bluff, often-crude Syldoon. Arki's adventure with the Syldoon is filled with bouts of violence and political intrigue, and Chung performs these scenes with energy while keeping Arki's wide-eyed perspective intact. As Arki shakes off his small-town innocence, events unfold that hint at a larger conflict yet to come.

Interesting

If you can stick with it and the weird narration I can confirm that book 2 improves.

As others have said the narration is really jarring at points. Huge gaps where I actually looked at my phone to see if I had accidentally pressed pause.

Also as another reviewer mentioned the fake laugh is so very cringe worthy.

Anyway, the story is actually quite good. The narration and characters do improve in book 2 and I actually have high hopes for book 3.

Lots of content for free which is great

Fun but not especially well written

I certainly enjoyed it, its is a page turner but I found the characters a little flat at times. Perhaps because the objectives of the characters are only revealed after the events they undertake occur each can feel a little as though it was randomly generated as a fun next scene, rather than feeling like part of the wider storyline.
Nonetheless good fun

Another requiring a pronunciation guide.

I really wish the narrator pronounced trebuchet properly.... it's said so many times and is just jarring. How does nobody tell him?

Interesting & original written as a logged story..

Great easy on ear narration, very animated without jarring on the ears, soothing voice, graphic language, details in abundance, fast paced and consistently increasing in Plot thickness, a great adult action adventure believable without huge amounts of magical beings,, subtle amount of maybe. Could be magic, not too fantastical, a strong unapologetic story, told very matter of fact, Adds to realism & reality of environmental scenarios. Open ending can't wait for more as characters in were. Old friends and sad to say goodbyes too some only complaints some died would have loved to know more of them before they leave or pass away. Author gives u just enough to peak Yr interest not enough for to satisfy Yr curiosity fully good book I liked it.

Poor narration

An enjoyable romp badly let down by the narrator. I cringed everytime he said "laughed" as I knew this would be followed by the most staged laughter you're ever going to hear. The accents of the characters were all over the shop. He was completely wrong for this project
