About this listen

'I have been overweight for more than 45 years. I've tried every diet going and been caught on a treadmill of guilt, deprivation, defiance, self-indulgence and despair.'

Twelve years ago, Grace Kitto was a successful TV producer, wife and mother. She was also clinically obese and on the path to Type 2 diabetes. Until one day when she left work determined to stick to one of her serial diets, but soon found herself eating an ice cream, as if on autopilot. It sparked an epiphany - she realised the solution to her many failed diets lay in her unconscious. In the powerful, instinctual part of her brain.

This is her funny and courageous memoir of that journey, the questions she posed and discoveries she made within the fields of psychology, neuroscience and biochemistry. She devised her own self-help system, a slow diet, and three-and-a-half years later, she reached her goal of a BMI of 25. Another three years on, she's still there. 'When is it ever going to change? Every dieter knows the despair of thinking that. When is it going to change? The answer is right here, right now, on this page.'

Fabulous book: please give this a go

I’m quite surprised to see that there are no reviews for this book 😳

If you have a history of weight problems, it’s a brilliant read - and unusually for these types of books also well written. Facts and fat politics are interspersed with her story, and it’s a great tale of empowerment. Brava!

Narrator has also done a good job and her tone matches the book perfectly.

So relatable

Didn't resonate with the parts about Bridget but then she's not my Avatar. interesting concept though. That being said, I resonated with so much in this book, the feelings, worries, the disordered younger years. it was like Grace was relating to me in some parts. One discernible difference is I was a skinny child, poverty stricken family and trauma surrounding that, but like Grace went to about 13 schools in all, very disordered life and have spent years dieting. Skinny until my first child, then it was like somebody used a bicycle pump to blow me up and the extra 4 stone stayed until a year later, I had my second child, then got even bigger. crashed through my 30s and 40s, then 50s and now in my 60s, still fat and looking for that magic switch in my brain, that will be the catalyst. I survived breast cancer 13 years ago and am left wondering will I survive this extra person I am carrying. I am hoping that, like Grace, I can talk my body and mind into it before it's too late. Thank you Grace for an inspirational read. Debra
