About this listen
Helen Olson and her husband, Elmer, retired in their late 40s to sail the Pacific Ocean from 1979- 1989 on a 50-foot yacht they built themselves.
Sailing Elysium is a personal account of that 10-year adventure, as they immersed themselves in the cultures and traditions of the local people, venturing to 27 major stay-overs in 21 countries.
In addition to enduring long days across the open Pacific and surviving hurricanes, they enjoyed inviting people from the diverse populations into their home on the sea. Each stop added to their pleasure and increased their knowledge of the unique cultures of the island inhabitants. Knowing that fear could be the largest divider between people, the Olsons chose acceptance and understanding. "Fear did not divide us from the understanding we gained", Olson said.
Sailing Elysium not only takes the listener to these faraway places, it gives a voice to the fascinating stories shared by the indigenous people.
