Invest your own soul in Cassell's work!
I’m shakily returning again from six universes, and the pretty horrific events that occurred in each, after delving into the audiobook version of ‘Six’ a spooky collection of short stories from Mark Cassell. Why do I scare myself so much?
I'd read the novel when it first came out and gave the audiobook narrated by Paul Winter a go, so some of my comments replicate feelings from my previous visit to 'Six,' no spoilers its superb.
From his bio Winter is a "Classical singer, classroom teacher, hypnotherapist. Now, a storyteller." He's very good. Calm clear dictation injecting emphasis precisely where needed, he tells Cassell's tales in a style reminiscent of an old radio show on a dark winter's night, pun intended.
The work Winter reads from stands firmly on its own, Cassell is an author of exceptional story telling ability, attested to by the quality of his large body of work to date, 'Six' included.
Each story magnificently uncomfortable, starting with ‘Skin,’ Cassell leaves the reader yearning for more from each of the characters he’s created, writing each one with subtle stylistic changes to shake things up and keep us enthralled. Why do the stories have to end?
‘The Space Between Spaces’ really stands out, showcasing his knowledge of the best language and techniques to use to weave his eerie worlds around us.
Worth highlighting, Cassell's technical writing abilities are among the best you'll come across.
Invest your own soul in Cassell's work and you will reap their terrifying rewards. You have been warned.
