About this listen

'Damien Lewis is both a meticulous historian and a born storyteller' Lee Child

SAS Great Escapes Two recounts the hitherto untold stories of six of the most dramatic and daring escapes executed by the world's most famous fighting force during WWII. From the very earliest SAS missions to the push into Nazi-occupied Europe, they cover some of the key figures in the Regiment, including its founder, David Stirling, plus other lesser-known heroes.

With each story comes an edge-of-the-seat, rollercoaster ride in classic Damien Lewis fashion, as readers are plunged into the escapees' experiences - sharing their most terrifying yet inspiring moments. These stunning accounts of survival beggar belief, revealing nerve-racking bluff and deception, knife-edge encounters with enemy hunter forces hellbent on wreaking vengeance and murder, but also incredible acts of mercy and kindness from those who risk all to help the escapees on their way.

Each tale of breath-taking derring-do reveals how necessity really is the mother of all invention, as with every step and at every juncture these fugitives defied fate, snatching survival and freedom from the jaws of the enemy, and all the horrors that would have followed capture.

Damien Lewis has worked closely with the families of those portrayed, accessing wartime diaries, letters, mission reports, interrogation transcripts and more, to relate how the men of the SAS crossed blazing deserts, evaded enemy hunter forces and escaped through hostile lands, battling against seemingly insurmountable odds. But most of all, these uplifting tales of endurance beyond measure showcase the triumph of the human spirit and the will to survive.

'Damien Lewis paints a uniquely vivid picture of the wartime SAS. Packed with detail, this fresh and dynamic book brings us as close to its remarkable members as we are ever likely to get.' Joshua Levine, author of
Dunkirk

'In these days when we are told to be scared of everything it is a relief to read of steely nerves and cold courage. Damien Lewis has collected examples of exactly these qualities from World War II and they are all thrillers, to be read with pleasure - and a bit of nostalgia!' Frederick Forsyth

'The fund of SAS escapes turns out to be too big for one book, and in Damien Lewis there is a writer of rare narrative gifts able to bring alive these epic stories for us today' Mark Urban

'An astonishing book: a collection of truly riveting stories of bravery, all brilliantly told. In terms of sheer drama and audacity, SAS: Great Escapes Two goes where no fiction writer would dare venture' Alex Gerlis, author of Agent in the Shadows©2023 Damien Lewis (P)2023 Quercus Editions Limited

The inspirational accounts of unbelievable courage excellently described by the author.

Narrator was a little tiring at times and lacked feeling and emotion. I would have preferred a narrator with acting skills to deliver these incredible experiences.

Unbelievable!

I loved the way the men behaved under extreme circumstances, their sense of humour and typical British spirit is heartwarming

Such loss of life attributed to the Commando Order authorised by Hitler

Brilliantly written and narrated. Having been involved in investigating directly 8 Paratroopers executed in the grounds of Chateau Le Grange on the 6/7th June 1944 by a German soldier, l could relate to so much of this story of SAS lads captured and also executed out of hand.
Even using official WW2 documents and interviewing a young family Red Cross nurse who witnessed the massacre when she was just 17 at the Chateau, who was nearing her 100th birthday a few years ago, it took me back to those dark days where young men were slaughtered so out of hand, by those adhering to Hitlers so called Commando order!!!!
After intensive searches for the lone culprits German WW2 Military record l never tracked down the perpetrator which saddens me greatly.
There was no record of his name or indeed how he died, during or after the war!!!

spoiled by the narration

I normally regard the authors work very highly, and the stories told are incredible. Truly inspiring men from the best of generations In the case of this audio book, very much spoiled by Damian Lewis doing the narration, with an off putting, staccato delivery and mispronunciation. You get used to it, but it's a shame.

Great but the narration of the first book was better.

Well written stories of the true accounts of SAS heros of the second world war, though it's hugely let down by being read by Damien Lewis himself. The pace is too slow and there's no emotion in the way it's narrated. It makes some great stories really difficult to engage with, no where near as moving as the stories in the first book, which is unfortunate.

Damien Lewis enough said

As always a captivating book about the true stories of the SAS written in Damien Lewis inimitable style.

Would have been made better using a professional narrator.

Great stories ruined by the narration

I find it hard to believe this is read by the author, as he is frequently tripped up by sentences seemingly going on more than he expected. it's a small thing bit became really annoying, with the emphasis often on odd parts of a sentence.
Brilliant stories, and incredibly well written. Just really hard to listen to.
