Fantastically helpful insights and sage advice
I am a seasoned British screenwriter with experience in features and am now moving into TV drama so was keen to get the lowdown on the US writers’ room system and showrunning. I had the pleasure of meeting Jeff recently at a conference in London where he contributed some great insights about the industry.
I could tell he knew what he was talking about and he was also very generous with his time and had a chat with me after about the biz and some of the differences between the US and UK systems.
I later downloaded this audiobook and it's a really great listen. Full of crucial knowledge for both the beginner and the professional who may working in another field within the business.
Jeff includes many tips and much sage advice, with a brief history of how the industry and its working practices evolved to be where it is today. That context is extremely helpful in understanding the roles of writers, producers, agents, managers, studio executives and the like.
You'll learn about writers' rooms, how they work and how to handle the politics there and on set and how to manage the production and post-production workflow. Jeff explains the differences between writing for networks, cable and streamers and gives advice on how writing original pilots or spec pilots help you in different ways depending on your objectives and assist in gaining a foothold in television. He also breaks down how it works from staff writers to showrunners and everything in between.
I learned a great deal from this savvy book and thoroughly recommend it to anyone wanting to know more about the US television industry and the many realistic ways of breaking in, navigating and maintaining a successful career.
Bravo!
