About this listen

Timothy West takes on the role of Rumpole in these four delightful dramas featuring the wily barrister

Rumpole and the Primrose Path
Rumpole exposes criminal practices at the nursing home where he was sent to recuperate after a heart attack, leaving him in dire need of claret, cheroots and good company.

Rumpole and the Scales of Justice
When Rumpole defends a senior policeman in court, his love for Shakespeare’s Othello and his old acquaintances in the south London criminal fraternity prove very useful.

Rumpole and the Vanishing Juror
Rumpole’s admiration for the integrity of the Old Bailey jury is legendary – but he is mystified when his most promising juror in a murder trial suddenly disappears…

Rumpole Redeemed
Invited to dinner at his local prison, Rumpole solves the conundrum of whether an ex-con can be reformed – while also seeking redemption himself.

Timothy West stars as Rumpole, with Prunella Scales as Hilda, Michael Cochrane as Sam Ballard, Nigel Anthony as Claude Erskine-Brown and Sophie Thompson as Luci Gribble.

Relaxing and enjoyable

I picked this up exclusively to listen to Timothy West and Prunella Scales and I wasn’t disappointed. As always they are a delight to listen to and the rest of the cast put in a good turn. As a bonus I really enjoyed the short and snappy cases and I will now be seeking out more Rumpole. A pleasant and restful experience.

Great

Entertaining and delightfully performed. It’s easterly gale force nine outside and freezing. What better company could one have than another Rumpole tale and a roaring log fire.

Rumpole for the BBC

This is an excellent adaptation by the joint production efforts of the talented duo Marilyn Imrie & Catherine Bailey. The husband & wife team Timothy West & Prunella Scales are superbly cast as the Rumpole & “She who must be obeyed”. The acting in each episode is flawless. A wonderful Rumpole series for BBC radio to equal in statue to the legendary TV series of the 1980s.

Wry look at the idiosyncrasies of the justice system and its leading players

In the UK (where i imagine lies the audience for our hero, the irascible Rumpole of The Bailey) anyone of a certain age will remember the inimitable Leo McKerns seemingly definitive performance on TV some decades past. In these still aged recordings the star turn is handed to Timothy West, whose granular but lighter tones make for easy listening. The stories have aged a little but the underlying absurdities, hypocrisies, and bureaucratic machination’s still raise a chuckle and sometimes a proper belly laugh!
Given that for 1 credit i got less than four hours and elsewhere listen to books of 24-40 hours for the same price, the audible model seems a little oorff!!!! But they are highly recommended nonetheless.

Always good

There are a variety of actors doing Rumpole. Timothy West and Prunella Scales are excellent together and the stories never disappoint.
