About this listen

Stranger Things meets The Blair Witch Project in this gripping ghost thriller, perfect for fans of Michelle Harrison, Lauren James and Frances Hardinge.

Once a year, a road appears in the woods at midnight and the ghost of Lucy Gallows beckons, inviting those who are brave enough to play her game. If you win, you escape with your life. But if you lose....

It's almost a year since Becca went missing. Everyone else has given up searching for her, but her sister, Sara, knows she disappeared while looking for Lucy Gallows. Determined to find her, Sara and her closest friends enter the woods. But something more sinister than ghosts lurks on the road and not everyone will survive.

Really hard to follow

This story does not make for a good audiobook. I felt really bad by giving such low ratings, because the story was doing its thing, and the performers were doing exactly what the story and their director (presumably) asked them to do. But the structure of this book destroys the story in this format.

Early on in the book are a few pages containing text messages exchanges, denoted by name, date and time. And by the time the narrator has slogged through the metadata of the text, you've stopped listening or already forgotten who is supposed to be talking, or what the previous message was about, or who is now in a private chat.

Having come to this book from Sadie by Courtney Summers, I had high hopes that this would be a similiar experience and that the format of the book would immerse me in the world. It does not. It keeps me firmly locked out.

With all that said, the story itself delivers, so save your credits and go get the ebook instead if the story appeals.
