My King 👑

Royally Not Ready by Meghan Quinn was nonstop perfection. This story had everything - was hilarious, emotional, angsty (with a side of betrayal) but of course all the love you want from MQ.
There are quite a few things that Meghan excels at - My favorite is her ability to always ease in the “opposites attract” trope flawlessly. Lily - A bikini van shop owner who loves a wet T-shirt contest and has the mouth of a sailor, is sarcastic, and always has a joke to tell. Lily meets Keller who was trained to be refined, uptight, and loyal to the royal crown.

Emma Wilder and John Hartley do such an amazing job bringing these characters to life. I was so pleased to hear this in duet narration. Emma was so funny, her comedic timing was so on point. You could hear the frustration in John’s voice at all the right times. When it came to the love and the angst these two made the perfect narration team.

Overall, like all MQ books - I loved this so much. It was everything I was expecting it to be and more. When Meghan says “It's like The Princess Diaries meets My Fair Lady meets 50 Shades” You better believe she brought it all.

This Duet Narration is Royally Stellar

Royally Not Ready is a Princess Diaries type romance between a girl who would be princess and the Royal secretary charged with preparing her to take the crown. Narrated by Emma Wilder and John Hartley in duet, this story felt fully immersive with both narrators performing a variety of male and female characters. My biggest issue with the narration was that Emma Wilder only voiced female characters and I love listening to her man voice so much! But John Hartley's narration of Keller was deep and sensual and made up for it.

I loved the tension and attraction during the first half of this book. While Kellar resisted Lily's advances as best he could. There were a few very funny moments where I laughed out loud and others where I felt the deep emotion and loss both our hero and heroine had experienced. Keller is a bit of a Dom in the bedroom, which was fun to read, I wish there was more conversation of consent and boundaries. I think it was a conversation that was missing from this book and would have been much appreciated by this reader. I found this book to be a little too long, and about 2/3 of the way in my interest started to wane. It picked back up when they went to meet the king and the journey continued in the capital. I enjoy royal romance and this one was fun and romantic. Most girls have dreamt about being a secret princess, so this was a fun story to listen to.

I received an ALC of this book and voluntarily give my honest review.

A steamy twist to The Princess Diaries

Now I am huge fan of Meghan Quinn, everyone who knows me, knows this. However Royal Romances are really not my jam. So when Royally not ready landed on my e-reader I was curious to see if Meghan could change my mind.

I actually read the first third of this and then listened to the entire audiobook and I definitely got Princess Diaries vibes from this story. Lilly the heroine is confident, bold and lives her life to the best of her ability. Running a bikini store based out of a truck and hosting beach parties for promotion, not exactly what you would picture as an heir to the throne. When Keller comes along to bring her back to Torkesthorpe and claim her place as Queen, it is his responsibility to train her.

Royally not ready had three main tropes for me, Royal Romance, Enemies to Lovers and Grumpy/Sunshine. I think Grumpy/Sunshine was the predominant trope for me and I was happy that was the case. Keller was very prim and proper, just as you would expect an employee of a royal family to be; but don't let that fool you. Keller has a naughty side that certainly fulfilled the steam factor for this book.

I won't go into the storylines or plot at all, I will say for me personally I found the book to be a little on the slow side. I did love all the detail and cultural building that was put into the book as Lilly progressed through her Queen in training program with Keller. I thought this really set the scene, but maybe a little at the cost to the pacing. Lilly and Keller were likable characters but there wasn't an instant connection to them or their romance I wasn't 100% sold until much later in the book.
Overall I did enjoy it but it isn't one of my top MQ books. As a non fan of Royal Romances I was glad that Meghan didn't overdo that aspect of the story, it was handled quite well and really wasn't thrown in your face. I just wish I felt more pull between the characters emotionally and the pacing was a little quicker.

I think Royally Not Ready is a book I will relisten on Audio and see if the second listen ups my rating. The audiobook performances I thought were pretty good! Emma Wilder for me played Lilly well but I adored her portrayal of Lara I have to say, her accent work was fantastic. John Hartley was a new to me narrator and I did enjoy his performance too. Although the were a few things here and there that I found off putting about the audio. Mainly the absence of scene breaks within a chapter. As this was a duet narration, scene changes within the same chapter just didn't stand out enough and I found myself thinking huh what's happening now?

There is a sequel on the way in Jan 2023 Royally in Trouble and I have to admit I am interested to see where the story goes.

Warning you will laugh out loud & saloon💕

Royally not Ready?? Heck yes I am!! A sexy AF, poetry writing, loyal to the core, dom in the bedroom Viking god of a man!! SAWOON y’all. Keller is all that and a bag of chips 😍

To be fair to Lilly he is kind of a jerk to her at the beginning but he’s got a good reason (🙄 or that’s what he’s convinced himself). She is not deterred because she wants a piece of that scrummy Viking & won’t stop until she gets him…and get him she does🥵 Their chemistry is off the charts and they quickly realize that they have a lot in common.

Keller continues to take his duties seriously and trains Lilly in everything that she needs to know before she meets the King & Queen. Though she is still nervous she finds strength in Keller’s love. Though he tried to protect her from everything there are still people who are out to destroy them and Keller’s fixation & doubt is his downfall.

But y’all his courting game is strong & he woos the heck out of Lilly💕

You will definitely laugh out loud (the car chase scene is a riot), swoon (Viking poet😍), tear up a bit (they’re both searching for a person to fill the loss they have both suffered) and fall in love with Torskethorpe just as much as Lilly.

I’ll admit that I was a bit nervous about the audiobook bc Keller is a kinda prickly but y’all John NAILED it! His exasperation bleeds through;) He is perfection. Omg & Emma is so much fun as Lilly!! I’ll be the Louise to her Thelma any day☺️

Fave quotes:

“I know, but I need Lilija to know where I stand.” She levels herself with Lilly. “And I stand with you, Lilija. I shall be your backbone, your support, your concierge. I’ll be everything you need.” “How about a grandma?” Lilly asks softly. “Never really had one of those, and it was what I was excited about most when coming to Strombly.” Katla’s eyes now well up as she nods. “Yes, yes, I can do that for you.”—-😭this scene y’all!! Such a beautiful scene full of forgiveness & acceptance and blind love👏🏻❤️

“I’ve never felt a love as fierce or powerful as for the woman who captured my heart. I wanted to express the devotion I have for her through art.”—-told y’all Keller is swoon worthy 🥰

Fantastic

You can totally see this took inspo from The Princess Diaries. It's full of classic MQ banter, spice and humour. It's honestly a bit spicier than what some might be used to from your everyday rom-com, but the way MQ writes it, you are into that. I believe all the marketing (50 shades meets My Fair Lady meets TPD) is pretty much nailing it and if you like grumpy sunshine, banter galore, an FMC with no filter and forced proximity, then you'll enjoy this. The duet narration...chef's kiss. I volunteered to read and review an early copy of this. All opinions are my own.

Fabulously Delightful! Amazing Story & Listen🎧

This delightfully hilarious, laugh out loud, romantic comedy is absolutely amazing. and I loved everything about it, from Meghan Quinn’s wonderful writing style to the fabulous characters and storylines she created to the perfectly cast narrators who bring it all to life from the pages to your ears. I also loved the originality of this story and the unique twist on a royal romance and its spiciness too. This story grabbed my attention right from the start and captivated it straight to the end, and while it is a lengthy story, it flies by so quickly and you are so engrossed in it you do not want it to end. I adored the two lead characters, Lilly Campbell and Keller Fitzwilliam, opposite personalities from different parts of the world, though it turns out they have one thing in common and it is quite steamy. Lilly is full of personality, she lives in Miami, Florida and has a fun time selling bikinis in South Beach. Keller is the King of Torskethorpe's right-hand man and he sends him on a mission to the states to find his granddaughter and bring to back Torskethorpe. She has no clue who she really is, but she will soon learn and it will be Keller who tells her and then it is his job to teach her about the country and to prep her to behave royally. This book is cleverly plotted and the witty dialogue is absolutely brilliant, from the no filter Lilly to the grumpiest of grumps, Keller but there is a lot more to that man and Lilly knows just how to bring out his well hidden, oh, so naughty, alpha bad boy side. There is never a dull moment in this book, and it has a perfect balance of drama, humor, a touch of angst, heartfelt emotions, and steamy romance. Meghan Quinn, thank you for another amazing story, the laughs and the emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 And for the wonderful narration, Emma Wilder and John Hartley are the perfect cast to bring these characters and their story to life. They step into these roles with a complete understanding of the characters they are portraying, giving each a voice that fits their character’s persona to a tee, sounding believable and just how I picture the characters to sound. They set the perfect tone for the story, handle the witty dialogue with ease and land the humor effortlessly. You could hear how much heart and feelings they put into their work as they capture the character’s emotions and project them into their performance and have you feeling every single one. These entertaining storytellers are versatile voice artis

another excellent book

the whole experience of an audio book is so much immersive when it's done in duet style and this book achieved this perfectly. An excellent narration from both Emma and John truly brought the book to life. Meghan Quinn is fast becoming a one click author for me, I love her style of writing, her character progression, the pacing, the romance and of course the spice tops of this excellent book.

Another Meghan Quinn Laugh Out Loud Experience

I could not get enough of Lilly Campbell, she was so funny, her thoughts were hilarious, and oh so dirty, add in Emma Wilder’s narration and I couldn’t stop grinning, she was perfect. An American working on South Beach Miami, dressed daily in a bikini finds herself whisked off to what feels like the North Pole, holed up in a spooky castle, learning how to be a Queen, literally, she’s literally a real life princess. Her teacher though is Thor lookalike, Keller Fitzwilliam, and he has zero tolerance for her shenanigans, he’s trying his best to keep her at a distance. Can they remain in the professional relationship that Keller requires, or will the sexual tension become too much and need to be quelled? Sweet, funny, emotional, oh, and super sexy. The audio version was super entertaining (and over 14 hours), as I said, Emma Wilder was utter perfection. I did however have a few reservations over John Hartley as Keller, his accent was a little bit too stiff upper lip for the Thor image I had in my head.

Brilliant, witty and captivating!

I was recommended this book and was told it was a similar to Princess Diaries but a more adult version. I loved Princess Diaries when I was younger, so gave this a go.

It was so captivating, I loved it. Lily is such a witty, sassy character and the banter is just great. A good amount of spice, but mostly plot orientated. The world building is amazing. A new favourite of the year so far!
