About this listen
Four men in a rowboat make an historic attempt on the Northwest Passage to focus global attention on an environmental catastrophe.
"Vallely transports the reader to places few will ever go: the very edges of the earth and of human endurance." (Evan Solomon)
In this gripping first-hand account, four seasoned adventurers navigate a sophisticated, high-tech rowboat across the Northwest Passage. One of the "last firsts" remaining in the adventure world, this journey is only possible because of the dramatic impacts of global warming in the high Arctic, which provide an ironic opportunity to draw attention to the growing urgency of climate change.
Along the way, the team repeatedly face life-threatening danger from storms unparalleled in their ferocity and unpredictability and bears witness to unprecedented changes in the Arctic habitat and inhabitants, while weathering gale-force vitriol from climate change deniers who have taken to social media to attack them and undermine their efforts.

Thoroughly enjoyed it
But the message is what we all know, or all should know. The reality is we have set things in motion that no matter what we do we can’t stop. The future will be how we live with the outcome in a more sustainable way

Epic
Rowing the Northwest Passage is a book that tells the story of an extraordinary expedition that aimed to raise awareness of the environmental crisis in the Arctic. The author, Kevin Vallely, is a doctor, adventurer, and writer who joined three other men in a rowboat to attempt to cross the Northwest Passage. This route connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The route was once considered impossible due to the thick ice cover, but it is becoming more accessible due to global warming. The book chronicles the challenges, dangers, and joys of the journey, as well as the region's scientific, historical, and cultural aspects.
The book is captivating and combines adventure, science, and activism. Vallely writes with passion, humour, and honesty, sharing his experiences and reflections on the expedition. He also provides fascinating insights into the history and geography of the Northwest Passage, the effects of climate change on the Arctic ecosystem and communities, and the role of media and politics in shaping public opinion on environmental issues. He does not shy away from exposing the harsh realities and risks of his undertaking but also celebrates the beauty and wonder of the Arctic landscape and wildlife. He also acknowledges the contributions and perspectives of his teammates, family, supporters, and the local people he encountered.
Rowing the Northwest Passage is a book that inspires and educates readers about one of our time's most essential and urgent topics. This book shows how one can make a difference by following one’s dreams and passions while being aware of the consequences and responsibilities of one’s actions. This book invites readers to join Vallely in his quest to protect and preserve the Arctic for future generations. Rowing the Northwest Passage is a book that deserves to be read by anyone who loves adventure, nature, and humanity.
