About this listen

Kenneth Horne, Kenneth Williams, Betty Marsden, and Hugh Paddick star in 16 episodes of the anarchic 1960s radio comedy.

Round the Horne arrived on BBC radio in 1965, bringing laughter to Sunday lunchtimes throughout the land. Over the course of 16 weekly episodes it carved a niche in the history of broadcast comedy, a sketch show which prodded the boundaries of propriety and innuendo. At its heart was the suave and upstanding Kenneth Horne, around which revolved the multiple naughty personas of Kenneth Williams, Betty Marsden, Hugh Paddick, and Bill Pertwee.

Among the parade of regular characters were Julian and Sandy, the camp couple of resting thespians happy to turn their hands to anything, Rambling Syd Rumbo the musical cordwangler, Fiona and Charles the passionate duo, and J. Peasemold Gruntfuttock the world’s dirtiest man. Meanwhile regular film parodies, spoof sagas and musical interludes peppered the mix.

Round the Horne earned its place in the annals of comedy history, and is fondly remembered today as a groundbreaking series that influenced many more to come. Here the entire first series can be enjoyed once again.

Round the Horne

I’m to young to remember this first time around, and only fell into it after a work colleague started talking about. Horne and the rest try their best to hold on to Kenneth Williams but when he runs away he is brilliant.

Best classic comedy show

Listened to this on Radio 4, and really enjoyed listening to the whole series. If you're a fan of the Carry Ons, Dad's Army or any of Marty Feldmans work, this is a must.

I've listened to this many times. Many many times.

Kenneths Williams and Horne at the peak of their powers.Much of it stands up well to the passage of time.We know KW could be difficult, but he sounds like he's really enjoying doing this, and had respect for KH.Bill Pertwee obviously had talents far beyond playing air warden Hodges in Dad's Army. Not at all P.C. but I love it dearly. The best series are those penned by Feldman and Took, and you get an extended version of the theme tube at the end of each episode, presumably to allow the show to fit the allocated time slot.

Classic!

Brill-I-ant-ly, Side-split-ing-ly, Jaw-ach-ing-ly, cra-zi-ly written...but somehow...smutty!
This Classic of radio comedy is beautifully produced with all your favourite characters and Kenneth Williams stealing the show!

The Best

My Dad got me into Round The Horne in the late 80s with the BBC cassettes. Have loved it ever since. Bought the CDs, and am now buying them again on Audible. The earlier Beyond Our Ken with the same cast is also excellent.

Very funny!

The brilliant manner in which the actors portray their characters and the manner in which the lines are written make Round the Horne timeless! One would expect a satirical radio show to be rather dated however with brilliant one-liners and memorable characters this can be enjoyed at any time! Quite a lot of the content is very applicable to a modern audience and a modern world; and all of the characters are played so well that even if the line itself is a little dated; one still laughs at the general context as it is presented so well! Would definitely recommend! I have listened to this many times, many many times, many times!
