About this listen

Fight fire with fire.

Kenna Jackson is stressed. London is sucking the life out of her, and there’s no way to escape the rat race. Or is there? When an opportunity presents itself out of the blue, she decides to take it. After all, it’s change she craves.

Drumlin Castle has stood for 10 centuries and no doubt will stand for 10 more. Set in the heart of the Aberdeenshire countryside, it’s witnessed the best of life…and the worst. Not much is known of Rohaise, who once lived there, only that she was a fiery redhead, the mistress of the Laird, and that she lost her life defending both him and the castle.

As Kenna settles into her new role as Drumlin’s manager, she becomes more and more intrigued with Rohaise, determined to flesh out this mysterious figure from a bygone age. The past, though, as she’s about to learn, can be a dark and dangerous place.

Dreadful narration.

The book as with all of Shani Struthers was very good.
I have listened and experienced a lot of narrators over the years. I’ve put up with some dodgy ones and never complained but I will not listen to anything narrated by this lady again. She spoiled the book for me.
I’m sorry to write this - I never post bad reviews but I should really have returned the audio.
This lady could suit someone but sadly not me.

An intelligent ghost story!

No “woo woo” stuff in here, just a fascinating and highly believable story based both in the current day and in the James 1st witch burnings in the 16th century. The background to the story has obviously been very carefully researched and the characters both ancient and modern and very vivid. The performance by Penny Scott-Andrew’s is up to her usual high standard. If you’d like to know what happens when a 500 year old ghost of an innocent woman who was tortured then burnt at the stake, is awakened and wants revenge on what men did to her …. The either read or listen to Rohaise!

Creepy castles, wicked witches and Scottish scenery.

As a fan of anything this author writes, my review is probably biased!
Rohaise is an intriguing story that centres around an old castle in a remote part of Scotland, a young woman who becomes caretaker there , and the impact that the supernatural (or imagined?) imprint from a cruel time in the 16th century makes upon those who encounter it.
The castle and grounds are characters in themselves, and Shani beautifully captures the eerieness of the Scottish mist when it appears to enfold the castle, as well as the beauty of the forest that equally surrounds it.
I like the fact that in all of Shani Struthers books the amount of research she clearly does is ever apparent. The facts intertwined with the story make things more credible and intriguing, and I often find the information she presents and the social commentary therein result in an educational as well as enjoyable read.
Rohaise is a sad reminder of how women have and continue to endure prejudice, betrayal and violence in the most barbaric ways - yet it is also a story of acceptance, identity and purpose set within the most beautiful of landscapes.
Take the high road to bonnie Scotland and find out about Rohaise - you won't be disappointed.

Great Story, Shani Struthers does it again

loved the story. Couldn't stand the narrator, made the lead character sound whiney.
The story itself outstanding and creepy.

Once again she smashed it!

Wow!
Loved this, loved it so much it took less then 24 hours to finish, listened to it whilst I was cleaning, cooking, resting and out walking.
Shani Struthers has been a favourite of mine for a while all her books have had me hooked from the first chapter but this one, has to be one of my top 3. I was hooked and as much as I didn’t want it to end I couldn’t stop listening to see how it ended.
Whilst listening the characters, scenery, the castle, And especially Rohaise were alive in my mind, I could picture everything! And now I’m finished I am missing them!
(This rarely happenes when I read/ listen to a book)
I’ve been listening to this genre for years, It started with James Herbert, and once I had read through all his books most of them more then once, i struggled to find an author that hooks me like his writing did, it takes a lot! Im picky and fussy I need to be hooked from the beginning to keep my interest and Shani always does this! I often read/ listen to her books more then once a lot of them more then that! And even though I know what’s going to happen they still hook me!
I’ve read the reviews and seen a few say the narrator wasn’t great but I disagree she made the story come to life, I think she got the characters spot on! I know everyone is different and this is my opinion but honestly she was perfect.

Thank you Shani for another book to my collection! And I will definitely be listening to this again!
