About this listen
July 1144. Ricolde, 'the finest whore in Worcester', is found butchered on an island a few miles up the River Severn. How did she get there, who killed her, and why? Uncovering details of her life and her past reveal a woman with hidden depths and hidden miseries which are fundamental to the answers, but time has cast a thick veil over the killer's identity. The lord sheriff's men have a trail that went cold over two decades ago, and evidence that contradicts itself. In a place Catchpoll knows inside out, he finds things new even to him, and then the case becomes personal.

As good as ever
This book was just as good as the preceding ones. I have really invested in these characters. Keep them coming.

Best one yet!
Sparkling, loveable characters, wonderful historical detail and a plot which moved along nicely made this the best instalment so far of Bradicott’s and Catchpole’s adventures. Wakelin is also starting to develop a personality and the interaction of the three men is shot through with gentle humour. Jonathan Keeble also seems to have grown into the narration and has developed their voices to be more differentiated. Really enjoyed this one!

Sad but really enjoyable
If ever a story tells you that you shouldn't judge people by what you hear, this is it. It also shows that behind every face there is a story. Some of those stories will be happy, some sad and some just plain bad. This book has all that you could wish for in a murder mystery. Really enjoyable, if rather sad.

Another perfectly crafted story
I’ve made no secret in previous reviews how much I love this series and this book doesn’t disappoint.
Seeing the relationships between the main characters developing over the series is so satisfying too.
This one was difficult for me to read due to domestic violence by 1 of the suspects to his wife and children. Knowing how difficult it was for me to escape such a situation in the 20th century with 3 young children, and knowing she would have no such options in the 12th century.
I have to admit I was very satisfied with the ending when this murderer was caught.
Why are you waiting? Read this series from the beginning.
I’m off to start the next next book though I know I’ll be so disappointed when I finish the series… the only problem with binge reading.

A vibrant read
Sarah Hawkswood has a real skill in bringing to life 12th century Worcester. The way she inserts her research is not clumsy and obvious like it can be in other historical fiction. I am a big fan of Matt Addis so have only given 4* for performance from this narrator as it still feels odd after the earlier books. For the story, it got a bit too frustrating towards the end - I prefer to be kept guessing rather than waiting for the main characters to realise whodunnit :)
