About this listen
The astonishing and inspiring autobiography of Ricky Tomlinson, one of Britain’s best-loved actors and entertainers.
Famous as the loveable couch potato Jim Royle of The Royle Family, Ricky Tomlinson has entertained millions without ever leaving his armchair. Now, in his autobiography, he surprises yet again with a remarkable story of love, hardship, humour, injustice and triumph.
His mother used to tell him that he had lived three lives, but even she miscounted. He has been a plasterer, banjo player, stand-up comic, union agitator, political activist, film extra, award-winning actor and unwilling guest of Her Majesty’s prison service.
‘I know that I’m going to get stick over this book but there you go – it can’t be helped. And some readers might think I’m a terrible liar when they read what follows, but everything in this book is true. Enough lies have been told about me, without me adding to them.’

Nice one Ricky
Even though read by Ricky Tomlinson the book was a better read, I felt Ricky left a lot out of the book, his funny stories. This was more of a highlight of his book, so I was disappointed by this. However I appreciated he did tell the story just wish it was word by word of the book version.

One of my all time top ten books.
I read this book years ago and remembered that it was one of my all time favourites and to hear it being read to me by Ricky himself has just made it even more spectacular. Its a must for true book fans.

A solid grafter who moved from the right to the left
I’ve always loved Ricky in the royal family but it’s his life as an activist that drew me to this book. I had no idea he was a part of the NF before his days of a passionate labour supporter.
Ricky is honest about the mistakes he’s made, be it falling for right wing beliefs he’s now disgusted by, his countless affairs during his first marriage, one with a teenager when he was close to fourty (which was pretty grim and he agrees. He also did time in prison with some real hard cases all because he dared to go on strike (thatcher my a**e). Ricky is a proper working class bloke, who hasn’t let fame or money change him, and he certainly hasn’t forgotten his roots.

Excellent autobiography. Good old Ricky 👍👍
Really enjoyed this. The ending got my toe tapping too. I'm glad Ricky loves Jim Royle as much as we do

Very good overall.
Really enjoyed this book, as it had lots of interesting stories that you may not have known about Ricky. A very humble man overall. Rather short however, but interesting content, so perhaps he left the babble out that some books include (which is never a bad thing)
