About this listen
Money changes everything in this darkly comic tale of romantic revenge. When shy, insecure Liverpudlian Ellie Freeman unexpectedly wins more than a million pounds in the football betting pools, she sees it as a way to transform the life of her bitter, frustrated, and, above all, distant husband Malcolm. She hides the news of her win from Malc, and uses the money to invest in a firm that will give her husband a better job than the warehouseman position he currently holds. And, indeed, the new job does make Malc a new man - a new man who suddenly envisions a life without Ellie. Can Ellie, too, become a new person? Can she become a stronger, more confident woman who is capable of winning her husband back…and is that even what she wants anymore?

No real ending
No real ending and the narrator’s voice did not fit the setting or the accent.

Terrible narrator i couldn’t listen
Liked the story as it’s not the usual run of the mill stuff but the narrator was so bad, switching between American and a very bad cockney accent it ruined the story for me

Lacking?
I wanted a stronger ending. The twist was unexpected, so that's a plus. But i wanted to see more character development and satisfaction in the ending. Also, the relationships just are not believable at all. I can't imagine half of these conversations happening with real people. I do like this author's way of writing though, with the details she weaves in to create a picture of the everyday settings.
P.S. I agree that the narration was really rough, especially the poorly done UK accents. I will say, though, that I hardly ever see UK narrators being called out for doing poor North American accents, but that happens a lot too...

Good story terrible narration
I’ve listened to a few of Gillian Whites books now and think she is a really good author. I love how she writes about ordinary people going through extraordinary circumstances.
I think this author has been done a great disservice in the terrible narration of many of her books though. Please PLEASE Audible -get them re-recorded with good narrators the story’s are really worth it.
The narration in this one was truly heinous. An American or Canadian not sure..trying to do a book based around Newcastle is bad enough but her attempts at even a basic English accent sounded like she was taking the mickey. I only held out to the end as I liked the story.

This should have had 5 stars
A wonderful story with evocative characters and locations which would have been perfect with a Liverpudlian narrator, rather than an American. Still very engaging.

The story was original
I loved the twists and turns of the novel, but the narrator was poorly chosen for this particular novel as her grasp of the character’s accent was at times, laughable.
