About this listen

In Tolstoy's final novel, a privileged nobleman by the name of Dmitri Nekhlyudov seeks to make amends for a bad deed he committed in the past. In the process, he discovers that he has been living in a world far removed from the reality of the average person.

Believing that he must right a wrong that he did to his former maid, Dmitri visits the prison where she is being held. There, he discovers oppressive conditions, injustice, and monstrosities beyond anything he ever imagined. In light of the fact that he may be indirectly responsible for the young woman's incarceration, he is determined to overturn the verdict and see her freed. This book takes the listener from lavish state offices to the jail cells of the oppressed.

Resurrection - an entirely new life?

Nekhlyaudov, a nobleman, serving on a jury recognizes Maslova, a prostitute on trial for theft as the girl he seduced when a young man. He sees himself as guilty of her downfall and the novel is about his search for redemption.
It is a hefty novel concerned with truth and justice, guilt and innocence and corruption at all levels. I both listened and read this novel as it required concentration. The narrator's voice took some getting used to.
So glad I finally read this book and will certainly return to it again to remind myself of Tolstoys amazing philosophy - his meaning of life!

Don’t buy.

The narrator’s voice sounds suspiciously computerised and lacks all tone and nuance. Don’t buy this audio book Tolstoy’s story is brilliant of course... but this edition is a disgrace.
