Summary
Newly promoted DS Julie Kite is at a crossroads. Her husband’s new job takes her away from urban Manchester and its inner city problems to a new life in tranquil mid-Wales. It is to be a new start for them both. On her first day at Builth Wells police station, Julie is thrust unexpectedly into the centre of a murder investigation in a remote farming community. At the same time, Stephen Collins is set free from HMP Strangeways. He immediately makes his way back to mid-Wales, the scene of his heinous crime, in order to confront those who had a hand in his incarceration.
The twists and turns of the investigation into the death of solicitor Gareth Watkin force DS Kite to confront her own demons alongside those of her new community and the lengths to which we’ll go to protect our families.

Fantastic book loved the story and the narrator nailed all the accents she was fantastic and drew me into the story! Would love to hear more!

Excellent story, poor performance
I thought the book was great, and read it when it was first written. I found it interesting that the author left choosing the culprit until the very end of her writing process, and it really helped to keep the reader guessing. I enjoyed the settings in small-town Powys and on the rural hills - they were perfectly observed.
Unfortunately, I felt that the narrator missed the Mid-Wales accents by a long way. I can see why she was chosen for the job, but the pronunciation of the Welsh place names was excruciating, as were some of the English words. It’s perhaps doing a little research - for instance, S.O.C.O. is commonly pronounced as a single word rather than spelled out. The tone and pace were lacking in variation, and I felt that these performance factors were detrimental to the presentation.
I hope that Jan’s second book will be offered in audiobook format - it is worth doing!
