About this listen

From the bestselling author of Where the Story Starts comes a tale about dealing with the past - and finally facing the future.

Pip Appleby seems to have it all, with her prestigious job as a human rights lawyer and her enviable London home. But then a tragic accident stops her life in its tracks, and in an instant everything changes. Retreating to her family’s rural farm and the humble origins she has been trying to hide, Pip is haunted by what she has done.

When she discovers the diary of actress Evelyn Mountcastle in a box of old books, Pip revels in the opportunity to lose herself in someone else’s life rather than focus on the disaster that is her own. But soon she sees parallels - Evelyn’s life was also beset by tragedy, and, like Pip, she returned to Southwold under a dark cloud.

When Pip and Evelyn’s paths cross in real life they slowly begin to reveal the hidden stories that are holding them back. Can they help each other forgive what happened in the past and, perhaps, find happiness in the future?

Lovely story

Wonderful. I loved this book, particularly the way in which Pip and Evelyn were able to help and support each other. Excellent narration. Recommended.

Enjoyable Story

Took me many chapters to get used to the narration as I found it rather stilted, almost automated in parts. However I persevered and enjoyed the overall story.

Intertwined dual timeline saga

Yes, that’s right. Yet another dual timeline, intertwined story, but there is character and charm to this that others sometimes lack. Pip and Evelyn make for interesting and relatable, if not occasionally annoying, characters. Nice narration. Nothing groundbreaking but thoroughly enjoyable nonetheless.

Abrupt ending

After reading another of the author’s novels, ‘Impossible to Forget’, and really enjoying it, I listened to this one hoping to enjoy it just as much. This one seemed to lack something by comparison though, It had such a promising start and developed well as the two stories came together but then it seemed to lose its way with story lines petering out to nothing. There was no twist and no denouement, in fact the ending seemed abrupt and rushed, narration was lovely but otherwise a bit disappointing.

Hard to get into

Narrator was good. Had to make a few starts to get into the story. Don't listen in bed when you are sleepy or you might have to do the same! Worth keeping going but a little too long.

Enjoyed every minute

I enjoyed every minute of this book, it’s a book that you want to know the ending but you don’t want it to end, if you know what I mean.
The narrator Karen Cass is just brilliant.
Another great book from Imogen Clark ❤️

A lovely tale

Out of the ordinary literary fiction. Limited doom and gloom and not the usual dullard love story or tangled web. Pleasant and light reading, but deep enough to get into without being frivolous. A good read.

Great Book

Great storyline and superb narration as always from Karen Cass. I couldn't put this book down but I did find the ending seemed a little sharp for me, I guess I just didn't want the story to stop there !! Highly recommend, Enjoy

A new find.

I bought this book on a 2-1 offer never having read this author before. I am so pleased I did . It was an enjoyable story with two likeable main characters.
No big drama but a well constructed story that kept you engaged to the end.
I am looking forward to listening to her other books.
Great narration. Thank
