About this listen

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he toils willingly, trusting that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.

But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies... even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

I’m not normally a fan of sci-fi stories with my only real exposure being Star Wars so I wasn’t sure about this book when it was recommended to me. But oh my how fruitless my worries were when I got into it… This story was amazing to listen to and I’m so glad I decided to pick up the dramatised version.

Whilst I haven’t listened to the original audiobook, I fully believe this is the best way to experience the story. Whilst other dramatised full cast audiobooks can be a little too overstimulating and can be difficult to listen to with all the background noises and music, this book and all its cast do a wonderful job of blending the vocals and sound effects together in a way that brings the desired effect of adding immersion into the story, but does not take anything away from the narrative. And the cast themselves are all perfect for the roles they were given. There wasn’t a single character in the cast whose voice I listened to and thought it didn’t fit, they were all fantastic.

I can’t recommend this book enough if you are looking for a step into a sci-fi fantasy world, filled with tension, themes of love, tension, war and humour throughout, with elements reminding me of a story of the Matrix combined with the Hunger Games.

Just Fantastic

I listened to this book every chance I got! I have binged the first two books in a week. I love everything about it, the pace, the twists you don’t see coming, the writing, the narration and sound effects.

I’m obsessed!

It's taken me a little while to get to part two of this, but it was worth the wait. Sort of. It was definitely one that did need to be listened to straight through so you didn't lose momentum, and I think I was expecting more than just an extended war game. As a result, it didn't quite float my boat as much as part one.

The biggest draw for me about this story is the constant undertone of push/pull in Darrow's psyche, which is absolutely aided and enhanced by Stewart Crank's incredible narration. There were, to me, three distinct elements battling for dominance - his Red origins, ready to tear the Golds down; his Gold persona, which feels like it's developing from more than just an act into an essential part of his personality; and the rebellious teenager who wants to find his own way through whatever is happening. It adds something of a predictable-but-is-it quality to proceedings; I feel like I should know where this is heading, but actually I'm not convinced that there aren't some massive plot twists and shocks in store. And that makes me really excited to continue the series.

I did find it a little hard to follow in places, partially because there were moments that didn't have my full attention, but also because I found the pacing to be quite changeable. The big set pieces filled my head with images, and the more descriptive moments of quiet dug into my emotions, but the constant switching of loyalties, the different factions and the broad scope of the 'map' left me somewhat bewildered. While it is a million million times better than 'Lord of the Flies' (personally my least favourite book ever), the fact that my brain can't help but make the comparison automatically means I had something of a mental block that prevented me from fully engaging with this particular part of the story.

I think what confused me the most is that I was expecting there to be a school/academy element to this; after all, some of the first half is the characters taking entrance exams, cognitive tests and so on. So when this game started, I fully expected to see a glorified game of capture the flag to sort the strong from the weak, and then for them all to toddle off to lessons and for the warfare to be more of a psychological sort between the houses. But as the game goes on... and on... and on... I just lost interest as it felt a little repetitive. That being said, some of the insights Darrow gives voice to about its purpose are very clever, and do make the set up worthwhile. Plus, I'm sure there are plenty of little nuggets of information in here that will come in handy later!

Special mention to my favourite narrator, Jon Vertullo. Severo is somehow creepy, cunning, childlike and far too damn clever for his own good all at the same time. His narration sends shivers down my spine every time he makes an appearance, because he truly is an unknowable character at this point. Do we trust him? Is he just a little bit unhinged? What is this character going to do moving forward? An absolute masterpiece of a character, with a voice performance to match.

I think my quicker 'eyeball' reading pace would have made the story flow a but more evenly. But nonetheless it was still entertaining and I will avidly listening to the rest of the series!

Great narration, just not what I was expecting.
