Summary

A simple case for a new beginning. That's all Jonathan needs. Some easy, little supernatural problem to gain Kelly Chan's trust, and keep her from walking out of his life forever.

The case goes from simple to deadly when Jonathan's actions wake an evil entity with murder on its agenda. The only way to stop it is to call in reinforcements from the Manhattan branch of Dragon Gate Industries (DGI). But calling DGI means dealing with the head of the division - Jonathan's older sister. She blames him for the death of their parents, so she'd rather see her brother run out of New York than lift a spell book to help.

Don't miss this exciting addition to the popular Jonathan Shade series!

Starts slowly, then gets very busy

After the three-part time-travelling adventures in Books 4-6, it was good to get back to a single subject, single book adventure. All the usual characters are here and there's a sense of familiarity with them if you've read this far through the series.

The plot starts slowly, but as you read further it starts to get busier, and busier, and then quite hectic. Plot twists? A couple, and they make sense when they land. I enjoyed this - more so as I read through; yes, even the enjoyment level starts slowly but your patience will be well rewarded.

The narrator does a good job. Book 8 (the final book AFAIK) is next on my list and I can't wait to finish the series.

Sharp

I enjoyed this book. This is book seven and continues on from the gripping trilogy books, so I would recommend that you start with book one and work your way through them because so much has happened and a lot of it does have a bearing on what happens in this book. Like Kelly I miss the old annoying and joking Jonathan. This one seems more grown up, which isn't surprising with everything the characters have gone the but I miss the witty one line banter between him and Brand and even between the door guy at the DGI. There was a few sparks of it between him and his sister, so I hope it's to long before he is cracking jokes while getting beaten up, um I mine beating up the bad guys. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy this book and think it is well worth the listen and you also learn a bit more about his family life. Off to start the next book.
Kelly doesn't like him and wants her old Jonathan back and Rayna doesn't trust him. If the new Jonathan has any hope of reforming the friendship he had between the two women is to find a case that they can all work on together. With Esther the ghosts help he stumbles on what he thinks is a simple case. Can he peek the ladies interest? The problem is the case was a lot more complicated than they believed and people start to die. It seems they have unwittingly released a dark matter that has no problem killing people. With the women in his life pulling away from him and the entity stronger than he thought Jonathan has no choice but turn to the DGI for help. There he finds another problem in the form of his older sister. She still blames him for the death of there parents, will she put her feelings aside to help save lives? With all the investments he made during his time traveling, Jonathan has become a rich man but will money persuaded her were doing the right thing didn't?
I like the narrator he has a good range of voices for the characters and with his sharp delivery he is a pleasure to listen to.
