Summary

The epic and phenomenal West-African inspired New York Times best-selling fantasy from an incredible new talent.

'Only one thing is more powerful than a wish, and that is a purpose.'

Tarisai has always longed for the warmth of a family. She was raised in isolation by a mysterious, often absent mother known only as The Lady. The Lady sends her to the capital of the global empire of Aritsar to compete with other children to be chosen as one of the Crown Prince's Council of Eleven. If she's picked, she'll be joined with the other Council members through the Ray, a bond deeper than blood. That closeness is irresistible to Tarisai, who has always wanted to belong somewhere. But The Lady has other ideas, including a magical wish that Tarisai is compelled to obey: kill the Crown Prince once she gains his trust.

Tarisai won't stand by and become someone's pawn - but is she strong enough to choose a different path for herself?

Absolutely captivating

I found this book, Raybearer when searching for novels narrated by Weruche Opia who read another fantasy book set in Africa to perfection. When i started this one, I was only half listening but several chapters in I started over from the beginning to catch the many rich details I realized I had missed. I can't believe this is a debut novel - the world is incredibly rich, the characters fascinating and engaging. It is touted as a YA (young adult) novel but the quality of the writing and world building is on par with any novel aimed at a more mature audience. I will be buying the hardcover version of this book and waiting for any sequels with bated breath!

A thrilling read

This book made me laugh, made me cry. It's elegantly written, with a solid plot and and incredible world full of diversity, love, and betrayal. It's a must read with a narrator who understood each character's needs and voice.

Straight on to book 2 I love it that much

Beautifully woven in a way that nothing is easily predicted. Actions scenes creep up on you. I’m diving right into book 2 and this will be going into my favourite relisten list.

Loved it, straight on to the next one!

Absolutely loved the pan African mythology, the strong female lead and the premise which reminded me of Garth Nix and Trudi Canavan. Beautifully and lyrically written with an incredibly likeable heroine. I love that the characters were often conflicted with no absolute of good and evil which characterises so much fantasy writing. Can’t wait for more by this author!

Love love love this book

Fantastic book and fantastic narrator. The world building here was superb, and the characters believeable and interesting. The narrator is absolutely perfect - I could feel the world and story through her voice and the rhythm she gave to the drums and songs. Tragic that the same narrator hasn't done book 2.

Best book I've read in ages.

I live on my driveway now. i couldn't stop listening long enough to get out the car! I was a little confused first chapter almost blinded by the vibrancy and textures the book was spinning me took me a chapter or two to find my feet and climatize and then... I was blown away. I'm going to order the actual book just so I can have it on my shelf. Brilliant.

Brilliant. Imaginative. Fucidly told.

A vividly told, vividly imagined, and vividly narrated African fantasy that grips you from the very first word to the last. This book COMPLETELY knocked me on my ass and that narrator effortlessly brings the characters to life.
Highly, highly HIGHLY recommended.

A wonderfully original story beautifully narrated

A wonderfully original story. The narrator, Weruche Opia, performed story in such a way that brought the world of the Raybearer alive. I loved every minute of the journey that she brought her on. She was able to bring the characters alive, with all their uniqueness, through the power of her voice.

Fantastic’read’

Really loved this book. The characters are multi faceted and engaging, the story twists and turns as you come to understand the whys behind characters actions and how that affects the now. The ending felt complete but promises more, and I’m totally up for it.

The narrator is fantastic. Beautiful pacing, such subtle vocal changes for characters that I totally forgot i was being read too! 10/10

The only downer is that this narrator hasn’t been used for the second book. I listened to the sample and the new narrator is so different in style that I found it too jarring. I’ll be buying a hard copy instead.
