About this listen

'Rasskaz-sensatsiya' (The Sensational Story) is the first in the series of unconventional Russian language textbooks for elementary/pre-intermediate levels (A1-A2).

The book is written in the form of fun to listen detective lines, which follow the continuing story of George, a Guadeloupian banker embarking on a journey that captures his day to day life set against a series of most peculiar events. In the third book, 'Rasskaz-kanonizatsiya', there is a second historical storyline, following a Russian professor who fled his country after the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. His life crosses with George's.

Based on years of his language teaching experience, Ignaty was keen on writing a series of stories that would teach useful vocabulary and grammar after some of his business clients complained that existing textbooks were boring and had no relation to real life.

"I was inspired by the talent of Mikhail Bulgakov, who mastered the skill of talking about complex subjects in an ironic form, and I began writing the book which you can now see." (Ignaty Dyakov)

His textbooks are fascinating detective stories with characters from different cultural backgrounds meeting in Guadeloupe, Russia, and Europe. They live, love, work, and relax. And, most importantly, they fight the world's evil, show exceptional ethics in both life and their work, and give us a better understanding of what is a kinder and ethical life.

"There is an understanding that a textbook nowadays should be kind, humorous, and inviting, as there is far too much negativity around us, especially in the media and on social networks." (Ignaty Dyakov)

An excellent book

Mr Dyakov, has an excellent way of presenting grammar and by repetition pushing home a set of case endings, for example, all within the framework of an interesting story with likeable characters . I really enjoy learning with this book.

Perfect level of difficulty for A2

I really liked the way some expressions were repeated. I also find the vocabulary just right for my current level (A2). The story wasn't amazing, but interesting enough to stay focused. The music jingle between chapters could be shorter though.

fun little book

This is a very fun short story for Russian learners and I strongly recommend it. The story is very original and a breath of fresh air, the level is appropriate for intermediate levels.
I gave it 'only' 4 stars because the audiobook does NOT come with the text... You have (and I have) to buy the ebook or paper edition separately. I don't think this is acceptable for this kind of book. By the way, the paper edition does not include stress marks on words, which is something I'd expect in a book for foreigners.
The second, minor, qualm is that the last 2-3 chapters of the book seem rushed; after the great reveal, the story ends very quickly; I think the overall pacing is a bit off. However, this is just my opinion and it doesn't diminish the educational value of the book.

A1 story for beginners

This is a superb book on so many levels. There is a dire lack of good reading material + audio, suitable for beginners of Russian - and this book helps to fill that gap. In addition, you learn the language and naturally learn the grammar, rather than the other way round (see Lomb's theories around reading) I have a hard copy, a PDF copy from the author, and the audible soundtrack. To begin, just work on one sentence at a time.

1. Get yourself a dictionary (openrussian), and decode every word in the sentence. Try to find the original root word, and you'll instantly get to grips with the grammar, because you'll see the patterns naturally.
2. Then type the sentence into a translator (yandex, google) in order to understand the whole sentence.
3. Play the audible track one sentence at a time and just listen to how the words are spoken. Don't forget in audible, you can slow down the speed, and bookmark. I bookmark every paragraph and label each one, so I can find them and go to any place I want.
4. Mimic the sound track and say the words out loud. Try to match your voice to the speakers tone and rhythm.
5. Put each sentence into a flashcard system (try quizlet etc.) and try to translate from Russian to English/English to Russian - say the words out loud.
6. Then try to write each sentence in Russian from the English flashcard (change your keyboard, so it will type in both languages).
7. At the end of each chapter, practise reading the whole chapter in one go, and then listening (without looking at any words) to the whole chapter in one go.
8. Aim to do one chapter per week as a minimum (there are 31 chapters).

Do the first six steps every day without fail, and you'll soon be reading, writing, speaking and listening to Russian!
