About this listen
*On Reader's Digest's list of "30 new books we can't wait to read in 2022"*
Private investigator Elvis Cole and his enigmatic partner Joe Pike are back on the case in this brilliant thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Robert Crais.
Adele Schumacher isn't a typical worried mom. When she hires Elvis to find her missing son, a controversial podcaster named Josh Shoe, she brings a bag filled with cash, bizarre tales of government conspiracies, and a squad of professional bodyguards. Finding Josh should be simple, but Elvis quickly learns he isn't alone in the hunt—a deadly team of mysterious strangers are determined to find Josh and his adult film star girlfriend first.
With dangerous secrets lurking behind every lead, Elvis needs his friend Joe Pike more than ever to uncover the truth about Josh, corrupt politicians, and the vicious business cartels rotting the heart of Los Angeles from within. And when Elvis's estranged girlfriend Lucy Chenier and her son, Ben, return, he learns just how much he has to lose...if he survives.
Written with the heart, humor, and relentless suspense for which Crais is famous, Racing the Light delivers Elvis Cole's most dangerous case yet.

“Narrator Luke Daniels paints a landscape of memorable characters with distinct personalities and voices as diverse as the story's many twists. While Crais remains an architect of skillful dialogue, Daniels gives the characters added personality and paces his delivery to make the story even more satisfying.”—AudioFile Magazine
“Daniels provides a superb narration that leads with a steady, centering general narrator voice that is a perfect match for Elvis Cole. From authentic Louisiana accents to manipulation of pitch and tone, Daniels uses all the techniques to deliver dynamic dialogue for a large cast of uniquely voiced characters.”—Booklist
"A whirlwind of action, fisticuffs, and stray bullets, along with Crais’ usual dose of heart and humor, make for a riveting and satisfying read."—Booklist (starred review)

Good but not brilliant .
I was happy to be back in the company of , Elvis and Joe but this isn't one of the best in the series . It ambles along amiably before slowly petering out . Still , Robert Crais , in average form is better than the vast majority of writers at their peak .

Enjoying the story. The narration isn't for me
It's good to have another Cole/Pike book. The storyline is strong and I'm enjoying it. I find the narration over the top - more suited to a kid's book.

Not Crais’s usual standard
Very disappointed. I’m a huge Cole/Pike fan and have been eagerly awaiting this book and now am feeling quite let down. The plot was a bit lame and I definitely did not enjoy the narration. Joe sounds nothing like that in my head!
Now things seem to be sorted between Elvis and Lucie can Barclay please come back into Joe’s life!

Sigh.....(in a good way)
had not checked for a while if an Elvis Cole and Pike book had come out.
low and behold YES !! listened to it in two days (could have done it faster but was savouring the book)
It's modernised (not the first one but i read a comment earlier where someone said its now too modern, it is not!!) for the people that may like the "older" books, they may not like the modernisation but it needed it. (from the beginning of the series to now, to much technology changed, and it does not take away from the enjoyment out of the book) also it needed updating as Mr. Crais would run out of time with his characters. (in the past more than once I would shout in the car..... phone Pike, or take your phone out!!)
I love the humour, the things that are always there ( Pinochio and Mickey) Pike the man of few words that always has your back , the other caracters that return, as I said I love the humour plus the cat.
This book for me did not disappoint. I love the story, hilarious nicknames, just one thing I did not like, it ended!! I wish the books were longer.
I have listened to the whole series at least twice and will again.
if you never listened to any of the series. I highly recommend that you do so!! I would give them 10 out of 10!! if I could!!
will not say anything else about this book.... just get it and listen to it yourself!!!
ENJOY!!!

Not his best. Poor narrator
Not Crais best but fair story. The book is ruined by the narrator who attempts, and fails, to do different voices for various characters and most of them sound like a cheap cartoon. Why he does it I don’t know but it ruins the narration.

Routine
I've read or listened to all of the Cole and Pike novels and pretty much enjoyed them all. This one felt like the piblisher had been nagging RC to "get another one out" very routine and impossible for me to get hooked on.
Narrator made Pike sound like he had throat cancer. Way too distracting.

Not up to usual standard
My review is totally influenced by the narration, as I really felt that the voice characterisations were poor! Pike sounded like Darth Vader and all other males, including mercenary Stone, sounded like 14 year old surfer dudes! The “bad guys” sounded like mafia mobsters from the 30’s….In the end, I was totally distracted from the story! Really disappointed as I’ve been waiting so long for the next instalment. At least I was kept awake on long drives as I was shouting “that’s not how John Stone sounds” at the stereo!!
I suggest fans read this rather than listen to it.

Up to the usual standard
An updated storyline to reflect the modern world. Good thinking by Mr Crais!
Nothing against the narrator (Luke) but I wish William Roberts was still narrating this series
