Summary

"A vision of the future that both chills and entertains." (Jake Kerridge, Sunday Express Magazine)

You can’t get away with anything, least of all murder.

DI Clive Lussac has forgotten how to do his job. Ten years of embedded technology - "iMe" - has led to complete control and the eradication of crime.

Then the impossible happens. A body is found, and the killer is untraceable.

With new partner Zoe Jordan, Clive must re-sharpen his detective skills and find the killer without technology, before time runs out for the next victim....

Leading the trend in speculative crime thrillers, Jem Tugwell’s thrilling and thought-provoking debut sits alongside Black Mirror and The City and the City in a compelling exploration of our near future. Proximity draws on Jem’s 20 years of professional experience as a software developer in the city to give an unnerving insight into how our world might be transformed by the rapid advance in embedded technology and fitness trackers.

Dystopian Police procedural

In this tale of the near future everyone is 'chipped' so their movements, diet and indulgences are monitored for correctness and their own safety. As ever, the powerful and criminal elements are able to work the system. When a murder is committed, it takes the lapsed detective skills of our curmudgeonly hero and long suffering side kick to track down the killer. Well narrated. Good start to a long running series(?). Outstanding!

A riveting novel set in a very believable near future. You can see how our technology is evolving to become the world that Proximity is set in. This makes this novel all the more terrifying.

Compelling, well thought out plot, hooked all the way through. The narrator did an excellent job with the voices, each character was clearly identifiable.

Strongly recommend.

An audio page-turner, that left me wanting more

reminiscent, in some ways, of Demolition Man, but without quite so much gratuitous destruction of property! If you are one of those people who likes nothing better than to be told what to do, then you'll wonder what the point of this book might be. George Orwell could not have conceived of the society envisaged in this book… the worst kind of invasive, controlling and benevolently punitive of societies, dedicated wholeheartedly to taking all the fun out of your life. Into this mix an old-fashioned cop is dropped, kicking against a world that he has been sucked into and embraces with a dedicated reluctance. Then the bad guys turn out to be part of the system and there is a mysterious homicidal psychopath on the loose. If self-serving authoritarianism that might one day bend you to its will, is enough to make you want to fight back (as a knee-jerk first reaction), then this book will have you looking around for where you can sign up for the revolution!

A plausible near future....

An intriguing exploration of a near future where privacy and anonymity have been sidelined in favour of a safer, healthier society. Of course the software rules that govern such systems are rarely foolproof and there will generally be loopholes in the ever expanding attack surface of these complex systems so such sidelining seems unlikely at present. However I thought the overall plotting was good and enjoyed the fictional ride.
