About this listen

This radio dramatization of the classic movie, featuring the original stars, aired on December 31, 1945.

The Lux Radio Theatre was one of radio's most popular series, attracting Hollywood's top stars and boasting a lavish budget. It began in 1934 by featuring dramas from Broadway, but there was not enough material to support the show. In an attempt to reverse the slipping ratings, the show was moved to Hollywood in 1936, where there was plenty of material and talent. In fact, filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille often served as the host.

A true classic

Having seen the movie, I wasn't expecting miracles but being an avid John Garfield fan, this was a must-have purchase and it has not disappointed. Even the interruptions for Lux adverts were not too annoying - and would have today's feminists' hair standing on end - most amusing. For anyone who loves "Old Hollywood", its a good blast from the past. It was recorded in 1946 (a long time before I was born!) and John Garfield's character was based on a Al Schmidt, who is interviewed at the end of the recording, a war hero returning home having lost his sight. He is surprised to learn that the girl he left behind still wants him despite his loss of sight and returns unexpectedly with her "home" for Christmas. All parts are well read and the recording is much "of the time".

To appreciate it, you really will need to have an interest in old movies, the 1940's, old style radio dramatisations - but it is easy listening, atmospheric, humorous and without a doubt, gives you a feeling that "you were there"...even if it was years before you were born!
