Summary

Under cover of night in Richmond, Virginia, a human monster strikes, leaving a gruesome trail of stranglings that has paralysed the city. Medical examiner Kay Scarpetta suspects the worst: a deliberate campaign by a brilliant serial killer whose signature offers precious few clues. With an unerring eye, she calls on the latest advances in forensic research to unmask the madman. But this investigation will test Kay like no other, because it’s being sabotaged from within - and someone wants her dead.

Very nice book and perfect interpretation

Suspense up until the end and the narrator changes voices for every single character, she is impressive!

I do like the Scarpeyta series

I read the books many years ago but it was nice listening to them again - wasn’t sure about Marino’s voice but I warmed to him by the end- I’m on to the next now.

Bit of a Drag

This is one of Cornwell's earlier novels which I read way back. To me, the printed word seems better than the audio version. I understood what the characters were like and when hearing the audio version nothing like what I had imagined, Lucy Scarpetta's niece came across as an annoying spoilt brat. I found the story seemed to falter in places, although the plot was weak, to say the least, and not only weak but drawn out.
I do have another Scarpetta on my audio kindle just hope there is a bit more oomph to it.

Chillingly good

Exceptional, not only is this a well crafted, imaginative piece of suspense but a fascinating insight into the real world of forensic pathology. I also appreciated the way Patricia Cornwell depicts the chauvinism of the time. She highlights sexist nuances that are generally overlooked, not always obvious but a gentle drip, drip that only women are used to. Hopefully male readers will see what I mean and be surprised, as it really is an invisible but constant presence in our lives. (Getting better over time).
The narration is great, reminds me of Kathleen Turner's VI Warshawski, soft hypnotic American in stark contrast to the brutal storyline.
This isn't for the faint hearted but it is thrilling so worth trying if you're unsure. I'm delighted to have found such a brilliant author amidst all the mediocrity.

Well read

The narrator is great. Her voice is lovely to listen to and her accents aren't bad either! As this is the first in a long series of Scarpetta novels there's a lot of place and character introduction which slows the pace down a bit but still a very enjoyable listen.

Disappointing story

I’d never read anything by Patricia Cornwell before, and won’t be trying again. The story is rather dull and lacking in pace, and the characters stereotyped cut-outs who don’t inspire an ounce of interest or sympathy. Even a pizza making session led by Ms Scarpetta, a woman of supposedly true Italian heritage, sounds as if it’s been copied out of a glossy magazine! How this feebly drawn character has obtained a following such as to figure as the heroine of a whole series of books is totally beyond me. I don’t read detective type novels with expectations of great literature, but at least for a good yarn, some nail-biting moments, intrigue, wit and strong characters - this book offered none of that. Some mildly interesting scientific passages don’t compensate for the other defects and I can only suppose that Cornwell’s aficionados have simply been ‘blinded by science’, overlooking such important features of fiction as plot and characterisation!
Lorelei King strives valiantly, but even she manages to sound bored!

Well narrated and good storyline. I’m glad to have found a series to work my way through - looking forward to the next book.
