About this listen
Pretty, smart, and pampered, Audrey Marie Hilley grew up in a small Alabama town believing she was entitled to the best of everything. But marriage to her high school sweetheart, a cushy secretarial job, and motherhood were not enough to satisfy Marie, and she soon began to act out in troubling ways. Only when her husband, Frank, became sick with a mysterious illness, did it seem that she was ready to put someone else's needs ahead of her own. The truth was far more disturbing.
Four years after Frank died, Marie's daughter, Carol, began to experience debilitating stomach pains. The young woman was near death when the horrifying reality finally emerged: Marie had poisoned her husband with arsenic and was attempting to do the same to her daughter. It was the first in a series of shocking twists that exposed Marie Hilley as a cold-blooded chameleon capable of the most sinister of crimes. From Alabama to Florida to New Hampshire, her trail of death and deceit included multiple identities, a second marriage, a false kidnapping, a fake death, several dramatic escapes, and a final act of desperation that brought the whole sordid saga to an astonishing end.

Captivating
Very good listen!
Not a story I was aware of but was well written, and I didn't want to stop listening.

tooooo long!!
This looked like a good story and was looking forward to listening to it.
As it happened I gave up halfway through!! To descriptive with unwanted details. IE:1 hr and a half detailing a victim!!
Also, the narrators voice when imitating a women made it seem like a kids bedtime story.

Perfectly written and told
This author is so good. It’s amazing how the same Police Trooper is in this and The Shadow of Doubt books.

Too long and drawn-out but still fascinating
Although the writing is too long and drawn-out it is an incredibly well researched piece of detective work on behalf of the author. He has really expanded on the known facts of the case. However, even with the author’s lack of brevity, it’s a really fascinating and tragic story. She was a scary lady to be a friend or associate of!

Fascinating!!
I'd never heard of this woman, but the story sounded interesting, so I thought I'd give it a go. In some places it did seem to repeat facts/ phrases, and at some points I started to drift off and lose track. it's good to give a bit of background information about the people involved, but some of it was a bit too much.
If you read this book as a fiction story, you might think, yeah good plot, but it's a bit far- fetched. Nothing like that could happen in real life! Totally mind boggling what she did and managed to get away with.
So to conclude, I did really enjoy this book. The story is like nothing I've ever heard before. I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I couldn't make out if she was stupid, clever, mad, or a bit of all three! She seemed to make life so hard for herself. But she certainly only ever thought about herself,
Some people weren't keen on the narrator, but he didn't spoil the story for me.

Mind blowing true life scheming
Wow. I
One of the best true crime books I've ever listened to.
If you didn't know it was true you'd think it was some sort of farce, the mind boggles.
This woman was truly bonkers.
Really entertaining, kept me guessing and left me with my mouth open in disbelief!

Too long
It was an interesting story but it went far too long. It started to feel like a marathon I had to finish, though my interest was decreasing by the mile

This was an incredible true story I had never heard of before. The narration was excellent. It is a very long book but it’s worth it.
