Summary

Geneva Pomolo and her investigating partner, Iris Reeves, visit a local nightclub where up-and-coming entertainers read poetry and perform music. A young folk singer named Leora Kismet is interrupted during her performance by Mrs. Maribel Smythe’s ranting about “depravity” and “the end of days”. The rich widow’s outburst provokes consternation and confusion - all the more so when she is found dead on her front porch just a few days later.

Geneva and Iris investigate the woman’s death. What are the odd claw marks on Maribel’s face? Could they have been created by some exotic animal? Why was Leora seen leaving the house just a few minutes before Maribel is found dead? What is her connection to the murder victim? And what of the housemaid who served Maribel faithfully for 20 years? And to whom was Maribel planning to leave her entire estate?

Geneva’s and Iris’s investigation will take them to some of the more questionable corners of Wrangler’s Hill, Indiana. And when a deadly ravenous creature runs loose on the streets of Wrangler’s Hill, Geneva and Iris scramble to find the murderer before they are the next victims.

Entertaining

I enjoyed this short cosy mystery. It is a quick listen but a lot of suspects get questioned in the process, making a fun listen and great for if you only have a few hours to kill. The characters are fun and I liked the idea of the two main characters driving around with a police scanner, so they don't miss out on any of the action and you won't want to either.
When George is teased by friends for making up a girlfriend, Geneva and Iris accompany him to a night club for a talent show. When a particularly obnoxious woman sat near them starts heckling the performers the pair find themselves kicked out of the club. They are even more surprised the next morning to find out the heckler was killed by the big animal that has been terrorising the local animals. Is it just a coincidence that the animal should attack the only person who had a number of people wishing her harm or was the scratch marks put on her face by someone of the two legged kind? Will Geneva and Iris find the mysterious creature? Or a killer?
I liked the narrator and thought he did a good with bringing the story and the characters to life.
