About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
This striking debut follows three women in an old Brooklyn Heights clan: one who was born with money, one who married into it, and one who wants to give it all away.
Darley, the eldest daughter in the well-connected, carefully-guarded Stockton family, has never had to worry about money. Darley followed her heart, trading her job and her inheritance for motherhood, sacrificing more of herself than she ever intended. Sasha, Darley's new sister-in-law, has come from more humble origins, and her hesitancy about signing a pre-nup has everyone worried about her intentions. And Georgiana, the baby of the family, has fallen in love with someone she can't (and really shouldn't) have, and must confront the kind of person she wants to be.
Shot through with the indulgent pleasures of life among New York's one per centers - glittering parties, weekend homes and hungover brunches - Pineapple Street is a scintillating, escapist novel that sparkles with wit and wry humour. Full of recognisable, loveable if fallible characters (and a few appalling ones!), it's about the peculiar unknowability of someone else's family, the miles between the haves and have-nots and everything in between.

"A lovely, absorbing, acutely observed novel about class, money and love. These are the themes of Henry James and Jane Austen, but they are observed with a fresh eye and a contemporary voice." (Nick Hornby)
"Pineapple Street is a portrait at once searing, hilarious and poignant of a NY family straight-jacketed by their own wealth." (Miranda Cowley Heller)
"I loved Pineapple Street. The characters are complex and engaging and their stories bring a particular slice of New York magically alive. So wise, emotionally honest, and such fun." (Helen Fielding)

A slow start but I’m so glad I stuck with it
I’ll be honest. At the outset listening to this book I wasn’t sure what the point was or where the story would lead. However it takes a lot for me to give up on a book and I’m really glad I didn’t. The characters developed wonderfully with me smiling and groaning in equal measure. I didn’t want it to end. Thanks to the author for a great read/listen. Oh - and the narrator choice was spot on.

Like a modern-day Austen
What a wonderful, witty, insightful novel about modern day money and class, yes, but also about strength of character and family dynamics. It reminded me of Jane Austen in its style.
I am very surprised by the negative reviews that say “nothing happens” when I think most of the characters go through an important transformation. Perhaps not everyone is able to understand or enjoys subtlety. However, if you do tend to enjoy literary fiction and can manage to read between the lines, you will probably enjoy this a lot,
The narrator is also absolutely superb, giving each character such a clear and distinct voice that it was easy to follow who was saying what. Highly recommend.

Good read
Great summer read. Likeable characters and strong narration. There isn’t really much of a plot, but it’s an interesting book nonetheless.

Entertaining and very well read
Marin Island’s reading is excellent. She manages to create very believable and varied voices for all the different characters. I’m not usually drawn to reading about spoiled rich people, but this is done with humour and self awareness. It’s an enjoyable bit of escapism and an easy listen.

A story of redemption
This is a novel about rich New Yorkers but by the end at least some of the characters have freed themselves from slavery to their money. It’s also, perhaps unusually for an American novel, about class. It’s superbly narrated and there are some moments of high drama. I strongly recommend it.

Boring
Description of a monied, but terminally dull family and their furniture. Waste of a credit

Not sure what to say…
It filled a few hours. I was always waiting to find out when the purpose of the story was going to become clear. But no. No purpose. Just a story of annoying rich American WASPS.
As I said it was a time filler but no more.

Roll your eyes brilliant
whilst the story took a bit too get going, it was funny, witty and charming. lots of laughs. Sometimes at the characters portals. Ves y stertypical at times. But they have a great way to look at things.
