Das malerische Städtchen Heiligwaldenstein bildet mit dem gleichnamigen Staate eines jener Duodez-Fürstentümer, aus denen das Deutsche Reich zum Teil noch so lange bestand. Es war der preußischen Hegemonie erst verhältnismäßig spät angegliedert worden – kaum fünfzig Jahre vor dem Tage, da Flambeau und Pater Brown in einem der Wirtsgärten des Städtchens zusammensaßen und von dem köstlichen einheimischen Biere tranken.
