Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

A pure pleasure of a novel set in Georgian London where the discovery of a mysterious ancient Greek vase sets in motion conspiracies, revelations and romance.

There is a fine line between coincidence and fate....

In London 1799, Dora Blake is an aspiring jewellery artist who lives with her uncle in what used to be her parents' famed shop of antiquities. When a mysterious Greek vase is delivered, Dora is intrigued by her uncle's suspicious behaviour and enlists the help of Edward Lawrence, a young man seeking acceptance into the Society of Antiquaries. Edward sees the ancient vase as key to unlocking his academic future. Dora sees it as her chance to restore her parents' shop to its former glory and to escape her uncle.

But what Edward discovers about the vase has Dora questioning everything she has ever known, about her life, her family and the world as she knows it. As Dora uncovers the truth she starts to realise that some mysteries are buried and some boxes are locked, for a reason.

Gorgeously atmospheric and deliciously unpauseable, Pandora deals with themes of secrets and deception, love and fulfilment, fate and hope.

Critic reviews

"Olivia Vinall, who was delightful as DS Matilda Stone in Queens of Mystery, maintains a running current of excitement and copes effortlessly with the challenge of a cast ranging from grandes dames to Cornish seamen." (The Sunday Times)

A captivating story

Although a little slow at the start this beautifully written story unravels with increasing momentum to a very satisfactory conclusion. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Lovely Regency, mythical combination

This was liked by readers who enjoyed the Mermaid and Mrs Hancock, which I did. It shares many similar themes and is very well done. I found the characters in the Mermaid slightly more fun, but if you enjoyed T. M. and M. H., Pandora is worth trying too.

Interesting spin on the myth… but

Don’t get me wrong I really quite enjoyed this little yarn, generation is first class and the story skips along in an entertaining and occasionally. It was interesting we set the height of the Regency period without falling into stereotypes.

That all said, I can’t help but feel that the narrative failed to develop a range of tantalising details that were introduced but not really followed up.

Exquisite!

A captivating story, beautifully written and narrated. I couldn’t stop listening to it, and now I regret that, as it is over. Perfection.

A wild story here and there

Interesting audio, loved the narration, a little over the top here and there. A story is meant to indulge the imagination and Pandora certainly did that if perhaps a little too much for my taste. A great listen though

Slightly daft

This starts off as a run-of-the-mill ‘orphan finding out her parents’ legacy with the help of a clueless chap she has an on-off attraction for‘ story but then towards the end it goes a bit bonkers. It’s not a bad book per say but, for me, somewhat disappointing.

An amazing book

I didn't want this book to end. I loved it! Great story and characters, gives you a real sense of London in the 18th Century.
