Summary

What is it about the humble pig that holds such a special place in our hearts?

In a frosty field on the longest night of the year, eight little piglets snuffle their first breaths, and jostle close to their mother to feed...

So begins the life of the farm animal that you think you already know. But think again...

This is the magical account of the life and times of a gang of Saddleback pigs, from one of the most forward-thinking organic farmers in the United Kingdom.

Helen Browning shines a light on the secret lives of these mischievous, intelligent, and inventive animals - and shares her vision for the future of ethical farming.

If you liked The Secret Life of Cows and A Shepherd's Life, you'll love this evocative and illuminating tale...

An interesting book spoiled by the narration

Although subject matter is challenging for me (I don’t like pigs, don’t eat any red meat and hardly any poultry, don’t agree with some of the management techniques described) I found this interesting and w worthwhile listen.
I realise that getting the author to read the book is logical , but it was a mistake. She has a very odd, stilted way of reading and puts emphasis on the wrong parts of sentences. She also laughs at her “jokes”, most of which aren’t funny, and even laughs at points where it isn’t at all appropriate, for instance when talking about a death.

In general I would recommend the book, but not in audio format.

Fascinating and Timely

We are currently on a driving holiday and are using audio books for the first time. Already a convert to this lifestyle, this book has filled us with hope and optimism and we trust that those in power absorb every single word and help our farmers to follow Helen Browning's example.

Enthralling

What a great listen! I was really drawn into the life on the farm, pub and neighbourhood. I'm a lifelong carnivore, but this encouraged me to move further to eat less, but better, meat. So good, too, to hear it so soon after publication, remembering the weather events all too clearly.

Outstanding and narrated beautifully

The book takes the reader on an educational journey through the significant benefits of free-ranging organic farming, with key focuses being on the quality - whether this be: soil, animal care, wildlife and ecological enhancement, or the produce provided to any variety of end users.
I totally admire and support the direction Helen Browning and her team(s) are going - especially citing that we have, potentially, a unique time to develop values and ethics well beyond the quick sprint of a political cycle.

For farmers and those that are thinking about it

What a fantastic book, full of sound advise, thoughts on farming, animal welfare and our food. I also enjoyed and much admired the many plates Helen Browning keeps spinning.... an encouragement for all the many women farmers out there.
