Summary

Twelve years ago, Nick’s brother Rob was caught in a storm out at sea and drowned. His body was never found. When Nick met Susie at his brother’s funeral, he thought it was destiny at play. Then Rob suddenly appears on television. He is a hero. He has brought down a terrorist who opened fire on dozens of restaurant diners. Everyone wants to know who Rob is, but he’s vanished a second time, without a word. Nick is soon drawn into a multi-layered world of lies and corruption, and is forced to examine everything he once knew. What is Rob running away from? And why do the police want to talk to him? Nick wants to find his brother but if he does, he also risks losing the woman he loves. Because Susie has her own secrets, and as the truth emerges, Nick finds it is those closest to us we should fear the most …

Okay

It was okay, overlong in my opinion and I must admit to a few eye rolls as the chapters kept going at the end! But a decent enough listen.

The narration was very good.

This is a very mixed bag

Am not sure how to review this. I steer away from obvious spy novels but was not long before I was caught up in one ....of was I? Happy family with wife working in London most of the week whilst hubby did his own thing at home. Brother had disappeared 12 years since but suddenly reappeared to thwart a terrorist attack before disappearing yet again. Hubby now takes on the mantle of private detective (with no experience but seems to have the knack) and the novel becomes darker and very complicated. So complicated that I had to dispend belief in order to continue. How on earth can an ordinary man achieve the results that eluded police! That's when I began to lose interest and skipped to the end .......... upon whence I became intrigued as to the denoument and went back several chapters for the answers ..... then back a few more! This is not the way to read a novel and I beg you not to do as I did. Keep going despite any (or many) confusing moments because I know you will be in for a good few surprises. Told you it was a mixed bag :) Whatever else, narration is excellent.

Gripping, twisty plot

I have recently discovered this author and love her books
Great plots but also great characters and all set in a recognisable world, normal people forced into abnormal situations. this particular book is stand alone and a great introduction to a very accomplished author

Gripping

I love Daniel Weyman as a narrator and so came across this after searching his name. Oh my god it is brilliant, I was gripped from start to finish, lots of twists and turns. I will be looking at further titles from this author for my next credit!

Fast paced, gripping read

loved this book, really great, gripping story, keeping you guessing on every chapter
the ending was slightly far fetched but didn't detach from the main characters
overall I would recommend

Glad to have found this!

I wanted to try something different from the usual Sci-Fi and Fantasy stuff and since I enjoyed mysteries I gave this one a shot.

The story had my attention from beginning to end, I grew to love Nick and like him I didn't know who to trust.

Both narrators did a great job though it was a bit strange hearing Bea for a handful of chapters in random bursts but grew to like her as much as Daniel.

C. J. Carver definitely has a hit on his hands and I look forward to his next book. If you want a good mystery or crime thriller this is a great choice!
