Summary

Outlander, Diana Gabaldon's landmark novel of Scottish lore, has captured the hearts of millions of listeners around the world and catapulted her to the top of the New York Times best seller list.

Intrigue, danger, and desire merge in this lush novel of loyalty and time travel.

In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon. Their blissful reunion is shattered when she touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone ruins and is instantly transported to a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans - in 1743.

Will Claire find her way back to her own time, or is her destiny forever linked with Clan MacKenzie and the gallant James Fraser? Davina Porter's lyrical narration will launch listeners into an exhilarating world of heroism, pulse-pounding adventure, and breathtaking romance as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love.

A great escape

I loved this book. The idea of time travel has always fascinated me and this book does it wonderfully. I could not stop listening to this story and was sorry when it came to an end. I can't wait to listen to the next part of the story!

One of the best

Don't start this book unless you are prepared to want to read the whole series. It is wonderfully read and a real page-turner. Strong characters that you will love. Beware also when you get to book 5 because the one available at audible (as at Aug 09)is abridged and has a different narrator. A bitter disappointment.

sexy, funny and often horrific

Horribly moreish! a wonderful reading, of a terribly addictive book. The lead male character will leave ladies weak at the knees while the brave and witty woman is a compelling protagonist. well researched excellent detail on flora and fauna and history.

Enthralling Book! Adventure,Excitement,Sex,History

Would you consider the audio edition of Outlander to be better than the print version?

Yes, definately better than the print version. I don't have to read the words! Just enjoy the excellent narration bringing to life all the characters.just sit back close my eyes and enjoy!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Favourite character is definately Claire Randall(/Fraser), closely followed by Jamie Fraser, closely followed by just about all the remainder!

What about Davina Porter’s performance did you like?

Davina Porter brought the all the characters to life, no effort was spared, however small a character, I think she must have really enjoyed reading the book! She made Claire perfect for me, very believable as with all the characters, and with regard to all the characters, her accents, pronunciation, etc. was perfect; no grating nuances as can be found with some narrators. Of course she had an easy job of it, it's such a well written believable book even given its fantasy!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, there were a few, in particular, the first was when Claire was being attacked by the red coat officer in his office, that was horribly realistic, then when Gillie gave her own life to save Claire's but the best so far ( I've 6 hours still to listen to ) was when Jamie led Claire to the stones, revealed why he had, and Claire's response to his action! Not saying anymore as I don't want to ruin the book for potential readers!

Any additional comments?

This is by far THE best audio book I've heard to date. A combination of great storytelling and believable characters by the author Diana Gabaldon, together with the expertly unobtrusive narration by Davina Porter. I can't wait to finish this so as I can finish the book, download more in the series with my ten pound voucher and remaining credits from Audible!

A good listen

It took me a little while to get into this, but once I did, I really enjoyed it. One of the nice things about an historical novel is that you can also learn a bit about the past at the same time. It was not an area of history I knew much about, so this was definitely a plus for me. The novel is an interesting juxtaposition of the strong woman from post WW2 being swept back into history, during the Highland uprisings. A story of how love can conquer all...

Great performance

I came to these books through the Amazon tv show but this adaptation brings the story to life an a whole other way. I love Claire’s characterisation, her voice is so funny at moments! David’s Porter does some great characters and a huge variety of accents. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
