Another classic
John le Carre was master of weaving stories with strong and interesting plots, situations and characters. He wrote this with deep intelligence and knowledge. His attention to detail is amazing. My pleasure is being woven into the story without all the bangs and crashes of most stories of this genre. Heartily recommended.

Classic Le Carre
Good story. Interesting background in the Russian satellite states. Excellent reader who brought action to life.

Think I need to try the paperback...
...difficult to hang on to the thread on audio book... but then I struggled to follow one of the more recent Le Carre films - maybe Le Carre is just one step too far for me, when I'm seeking to lose myself in a good story, rather than have to work at following it.

Wonderful reading
Michael Jaystone is a great performer throughout. The story itself starts off very interesting and the writing is very good. I did find myself losing interest in the latter section. But worth a read.

a good listen well crafted, but
devoid of any real plot or conclusion, drifting to an end. certainly not his best work, but articulate well crafted and enjoyable none the less.

Underrated post-Cold War le Carré
High paced immediately post-Cold War outing from Le Carré. Less deep espionage than the George Smiley books and more of a taut high stakes chase thriller. Published in the early 1990s le Carré is extraordinarily precient on the politics of the former Soviet republics and in the case of this novel, Ingushetia and the North Caucasus. Underrated and too often overlooked in my view. Jayston as ever gives an impeccable reading of le Carré's complex and conflicted characters.
