About this listen

Kidnapped and presumed dead, Kizu returns ten years later – just in time to enroll at an elite magical academy.

His education under the witch who kidnapped and raised him was… unorthodox. Now, three years behind every other student his age, he is ranked as the overall worst student at Shinzou Academy. But Kizu is determined to quickly change that. Not just for the sake of mastering long-denied schools of magic, but to investigate his older sister’s disappearance.

When Kizu was taken, she was the only one who swore to never stop looking. Now it’s his turn to repay the favor.

In order to do that, he’ll need to survive Shinzou Academy first, where the only thing more dangerous than the monsters are the other students.

Study, fight, and ascend the rankings – Kizu will do whatever it takes to uncover the truth.

Kizu is not an op rational self-insert robot, but he is reasonably competent and a fun protagonist who often relies on his wits, and notices his mistakes. We get to discover the academy, magic, and a fun supporting cast along the mc while he dives into the mystery of his sister. Competition and student rankings quantifies the progression. Jack makes the listen delightfully cosy, it is easy to get immersed in his voice and the story. I'm eager to get the next instalment of the series.

A delightful narration meets a story that does its tropes well and leaves me hungry for more.

Great world building with an interesting magic system and entertaining characters. Plenty of plot hooks and mystery to keep me wanting more with a story that came to a good stopping point.

I was gifted this copy via a Reddit competition, but I'll happily buy and continue the series. I'm invested and have already started the second book to see where it goes.

If you like magic academies, world dungeons, and a clearly living world with mythos and personality then this is a solid pick up!

My only real criticism is that it took me a bit to get used to the narrator, his overly posh accent sounded put on (and I'm not convinced it isn't!) which took me out of the story initially. But he's a solid narrator and after a chapter I was past my hang ups.

Fun listen in an interesting world
