Summary

Musa Okwonga - a young Black man who grew up in a predominantly working-class town - was not your typical Eton College student.

The experience moulded him, challenged him...but also made him wonder why a place that was so good for him also seems to contribute to the harm being done to the UK. The more he searched, the more evident the connection became between one of Britain’s most prestigious institutions and the genesis of Brexit, and between his home town in the suburbs of Greater London and the rise of the far right.

Woven throughout this deeply personal and unflinching memoir of Musa’s five years at Eton in the 1990s is a present-day narrative that engages with much wider questions about pressing social and political issues: privilege, the distribution of wealth, the rise of the far right in the UK, systemic racism, the ‘boys’ club’ of government and the power of the few to control the fate of the many. One of Them is both an intimate account and a timely exploration of race and class in modern Britain.

Revealing and heartfelt but still oddly neutered

First off, it is good. Considered, honest and open. I understand why with the people involved names can't be named but it does add a layer of distance that keeps everything behind closed doors. my biggest criticism is that it's quite a stilted delivery, and often sounds like he's reading the words for the first time. Still very much worth a credit though.

Brilliantly written and a captivating insight of Eton

Musk’s writing is so engaging and his experiences of Eton are jaw dropping. Absolutely loved this book. One of my favourites this year.

Life from a different perspective

Interesting, sad,eye opening, a good book, more political than I’d expected, I would recommend it.

I felt seen

I went to an English boarding school straight out of a Caribbean public (state run) high school. I often find it difficult to articulate that period of my life, but this book has helped me understand some of my feelings and actions then and after. In some ways I thrived and in others I suffered, and many of the reasons for this I am only beginning to understand. Thank you Musa.

An enjoyable divertissement

Eloquent without pomposity, this is a deeply personal and carefully-told story.

The author is thoughtful and insightful, bringing new perspective to what it is to be a minority in an elite milieu.

It is neither grand nor epic. It is really just a memoir of school days. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
